| Big enough, strong enough, but one of those players who just looks like the lights are off inside his head. Everything is done slowly and he runs in with the impact of a marsh mallow man.

Have to agree with that.
Watching the reserves GF last year, our young forwards (inc Emmitt, Ashurst, Dixon etc) got blown off the park by the Wigan pack and Emmitt was slaughtered.
Hopefully that was a one off as they've looked dominant at other times, but all the fire in the belly was in forwards wearing cherry and white that day.

Well, having spoken to him, he doesn't come across as a guy with the lights off. Maybe he has been a bit overawed by the occasion and given time and match experience he will grow in confidence and speed up?

| I would say saints reserves are better than Leigh, didnt York beat Leigh at the weekend, and York are in a LOWER league than Leigh. Good luck to Emmitt though, hope he enjoys his time there and can help him come on.

It would be, yes. Some Saints fans are still under the illusion that we can beat anyone and everyone.

How on earth you can decide that after seeing him, what, three times in total (if that) is beyond me.

I think giving a good hiding to the Pies is highly unlikely this season although some of our players will no doubt try their best. Meanwhile, we were nilled in the second half against Fax in a friendly so when the next Saints fan rubs your nose in it about York, just remind them of that.

Perhaps he's seen him outplayed in the reserves?
Emmitt and Ashurst are unlikely to make it IMO. Dixon has a shot, Frodsham has a big year ahead and a lot to prove. Looking forward to seeing Maggennis in the first team shortly.

I'm quite sure all players have been outplayed in the reserves at some time or another. He's a year further on and he's had so little first grade experience at Superleague level that I think it's a bit premature to be so forcefully writing him off.

It's likely we will only see Maggennis when there is an injury. So in one sense I hope we don't see him! Yet in another I would like to see what he has to offer, given that there has been much hoo-ha about him on these boards. I haven't spotted the difference in ability between Ashurst and Dixon (yet?) but I'll take your word on their respective levels. Both of those, though, had more game time than poor ole written off Emmitt. I'd like to see more of him before writing him off myself.

he has played for the first team 5 times in total, even though he was availiable through our injury crisis last year. We had 2 props out for over 10 weeks on the trot and he didnt show anything. Further more at 22 he's a year older than Frodsham, but behind him in perceived(by the saints backroom staff) to be behind him in ability. That puts him behind Jammer, Maurie, Foz, Tony P, Brynn, Cloughy and Frodsham. An 8th choice prop has no future at our club, its not harsh, its reality. He may make a few quid from playing rugby in the lower leagues but thats it.

| Yeah he played really well today. Made a spectacular knock on when he first came on but after that he took the ball in well and made plenty of yards. Think he'll go well with us

| =#BF0000Unless a promising player has major deficiencies in his game (Meli hands, flashpoint temper etc.), or a poor attitude, it's Richter-scale dumb to dispense with his services until AFTER he's gone through his final growth phase, which - depending on the player - is six months somewhere between the ages of 20 and 23.
I'm often amazed by the sheer amount of physicality some kids pick up in this very short space of time. Consider Paul Sculthorpe either side of 23. He went from being a talented ball player who struggled to make a yardage impact to a prop in the body of a 13. Another, albeit mere mortal, example is Jamie Jones Buchanan. That kid couldn't buy a successful run in the first team prior to the age of 23. Now he's one of the most effective back-rowers in the country - despite modest talent. Last season Emmitt did about as well as any modestly gifted back-row forward. Like his SL peers he's a big, mobile lump who gets through plenty of work. I've not seen much evidence of a footballing brain, but that's okay. We've got others to carry that burden. On the plus side he makes few mistakes and has no obvious technical or temperamental weaknesses. Which - right now - makes him an asset. He could become a far greater asset if he fills out and/or grows taller in the next year or two.
It's a pity we don't know what effect that final growth surge will have on him. But we have to have patience. Given the drainage of talent and ability from Knowsley Road over the last two years - and the likelihood that the new stadium will eat into player expenditure for a few seasons to come - we certainly can't afford to have a seventeen stone rhino bite us on the ass in two years time because we weren't prepared to exercise some patience now.
