| Quote ="DoubleAone"The ref was clearly wrong in the Bailey case and would also have been wrong in the Atkins/Wheeler case.
Both players were in possession of the ball and not tackled at the time.

But as the player was injured, Atkins had to do nothing more than put his hands on him and make a token tackle.
Atkins isn't a dirty player though, and is looking more like the Atkins we expect this year than the shadow we got last year.

So if Atkins hadn't off dropped on Wheeler would he have penalised him for a voluntary tackle, as it was plain for everyone to see he wasn't going to get up again, or stopped the play because of an injury?

| Clearly Atkins didn't heed the new directive from the previous Friday where you're not allowed to tackle un-tackled Saints players with too much force.

I think this was Chanelle's assessment as well.
Even if he didn't know the lad was injured it was one of those cheap and cynical aggressive flops that should be outlawed.

Atkins should've just known better although we'll never know if he genuinely didn't realise. Let's not get hung up on it, though.

For real? If you outlaw something you make it technically wrong. That is how rule-making works.
If the ball carrier is on the floor and not moving, don't power slam him like you are a WWF wrestler. A good rule I think. You can stop him from moving (i.e. complete the tackle) without trying to hurt him.

What I meant is that Aktins didn't do anything wrong within the rules of the game, only in the spirit of the game, which is not really something you can legislate for - you just have to rely on honour amongst players. You'll get the odd incident like t'other night, but on the whole, mutual respect between players will govern it well enough.

Oh, tongue in cheek. Ok.
DoubleAone, demanded to know why I had included Bailey when it was perfectly obvious why I had mentioned him and even included a clue in the OP.
And to your last point, I assume that was tongue in cheek, I can never tell.

Demanded ??? you see thats the problem from my point of view.
You take an "extreme" position on things when its just not called for.
Atkins flopped on the ball carrier and I for one would give him the benefit of the doubt.
In my direct experience players neither give nor expect favours and generally what goes around comes around.
Players dont moan or bitch about these things..Wellens included to his cedit..and they just get up and get on with things.
Like a famous player once said there is no where to hide on a RL pitch....

It appeared that you took offence to Bailey being mentioned when it was relevant to the thread, you also mentioned the post being sad and boring but yet you keep coming back....
Atkins flopped on the ball carrier who was clearly injured and had no one been near him the ref would have called time of for an injury.

| It was nothing and should be forgotten.
Technically there was nothing wrong with it but would we really want our refs making calls on "unnecessary roughness" anyway?

or one of his team mates could have taken the ball from Wheeler and it was play on.
Atkins played to the whistle because clearly the ref HADNT realised Wheeler was injured.
When did so much whinging and moaning become infested in the RL game
PS
No offence taken I just dont see the relevance of bringing Bailey into the discussion. Your posts are boring IMHO but the thread is quiet interesting...or at least it was.

Wheeler was in no position to pass th ball, again, he was clearly injured and would not IMO of been able to PTB.
It wasn't a whinge or a moan but an observation worth discussion and one which was spotted by the resident expert on Sky
PS
The clue to the relevance was included in the OP (i.e. same offence, one penalised one not).
Make your mind up, my posts are boring but the thread was interesting? I started the thread.

Think you need to take up watching Netball mate
Interesting to read a players view.
Quote Wilkin is also expecting another fiery duel and believes it will add to the spectacle.
"An interesting part of the game is the little confrontations and how they develop through the season," he said.
"I'm sure this is another chance to watch those individual battles. The one between James Graham and Ryan Bailey was well documented and that's part of what makes rugby league.
"Why take the aggressive nature out of the sport? If we do that, we risk turning the game into a non-contact sport almost like netball. "The strength of rugby league is the contact and aggression so why would we want to wipe that out of the game?
"We're programmed to enjoy the aggression and physicality of the game. We're all competitive people and that's what brings the best out of us.
"We wouldn't play rugby league if we didn't enjoy the aggression. It was certainly one of the things that inspired me to play the game.'"

| Now, something I have been taught in various arena's of sport and in mosh pits across the country; look out for each other.
As a kid playing the other code, we were taught to instantly look out for someone being injured and do our best to aid them, same in playing football and even in cricket (as anyone who has had a ball on the inside of the knee will testify). It is just good sportsmanship.
IF Atkin's knew he was injured, it was poor sportsmanship, but never a penalty.

I would have thought all professional sportsmen/women would do the same.
Agression is one thing, dirty play (eg. Newton on Long and Gilmour are another).
FWIW I dont think a penalty can be awarded for incidents like the Atkins one, and I dont think that Bailey should have been punished for the same offence.
However, the "tackle" was unnecessary especially under the circumstances that the match was taking place.
