Yeah he played really well today. Made a spectacular knock on when he first came on but after that he took the ball in well and made plenty of yards. Think he'll go well with us
=#BF0000Unless a promising player has major deficiencies in his game (Meli hands, flashpoint temper etc.), or a poor attitude, it's Richter-scale dumb to dispense with his services until AFTER he's gone through his final growth phase, which - depending on the player - is six months somewhere between the ages of 20 and 23.
I'm often amazed by the sheer amount of physicality some kids pick up in this very short space of time. Consider Paul Sculthorpe either side of 23. He went from being a talented ball player who struggled to make a yardage impact to a prop in the body of a 13. Another, albeit mere mortal, example is Jamie Jones Buchanan. That kid couldn't buy a successful run in the first team prior to the age of 23. Now he's one of the most effective back-rowers in the country - despite modest talent. Last season Emmitt did about as well as any modestly gifted back-row forward. Like his SL peers he's a big, mobile lump who gets through plenty of work. I've not seen much evidence of a footballing brain, but that's okay. We've got others to carry that burden. On the plus side he makes few mistakes and has no obvious technical or temperamental weaknesses. Which - right now - makes him an asset. He could become a far greater asset if he fills out and/or grows taller in the next year or two.
It's a pity we don't know what effect that final growth surge will have on him. But we have to have patience. Given the drainage of talent and ability from Knowsley Road over the last two years - and the likelihood that the new stadium will eat into player expenditure for a few seasons to come - we certainly can't afford to have a seventeen stone rhino bite us on the ass in two years time because we weren't prepared to exercise some patience now.
