| BA = Blue Army
SJH = Simon John Hicks
BA = Full name and nickname if you have one ?
SJH = Simon John Hicks, Nickname "Ozzy"
BA = How long have you been in Rugby League ?
SJH = Watching RL from age 19, playing from age 24.
BA= Who have you played and coached in Rugby League ?
SJH Played and captained the inaugural Oxford Cavaliers game v Bath in 1990's. Played for RAF Brize Norton, RAF and Combined Services.
BA = Do you like playing/coaching or watching ?
SJH = Would still love to be playing regular RL but the old bones tell me otherwise. I have a run out in the Masters format for the RAF a couple of times a season still. I have coached RAF Brize Norton in the past but decided to move into the medical therapy field to put back into the sport what I have taken out many times. I have watched with a big horn (timekeeper) in my hand for the past two games due to a hand injury but there is nothing like being in the technical area assisting the head coach and trying not to get the interchanges wrong!
BA = What is your best moment in Rugby League ?
SJH = My best moment from a playing perspective would be playing against the London Broncos for the Combined Service team. Unfortunately we lost 70-2 but guess who expertly guided the ball over to prevent us being nilled?? You guessed it...
From a non-playing perspective, being asked to march two airmen onto the pitch at Old Trafford with the Grand Final trophy in front of 68,000 fans will stay with me forever.
BA = What is your funniest moment in Rugby League ?
SJH = The funniest moment in my RL life happened in New Zealand when the RAF took a team there and we won three out of three games but you know what they say?? What happens on tour stays on tour.
BA = What do you think of Rugby League in the south ?
SJH = Whilst not as strong as it's Northern brothers, Southern RL seems to be on its way up. With the addition of Coventry it can only get better. Let's see if Broncos can weather the drama of relegation as I believe it's beneficial to have a Super League team in our capital.
BA = Why did you become a Rugby League fan ?
SJH = I became a Rugby League fan when my girlfriend from many years ago invited me to go and watch Widnes v Warrington for the Boxing Day challenge. Warrington won, sunk a few beers and I got my leg over. Happy days all round.
BA = How did you become to work at ORL ?
SJH = One of my RAF RL colleagues informed me of the imminent introduction of Oxford RL into Championship 1. I booked some time off work to go to the launch at Iffley road where the RFL welcomed Oxford as a team and offered my services to TB. The rest is history.
BA = What is it like working for the ORL ?
SJH =I give my time up at the weekend because it is fantastic to work with a professional club. The players put every ounce of effort in and the back room staff and volunteers work tirelessly to ensure training and match days run without a hitch.
BA =Were do you see the ORL in the next 5 year ?
SHJ = In the next 5 years I can see ORL becoming a contender for promotion within Championship 1 with strong player pathways developing in the schools, colleges and universities.
BA = Do you think you can help raise the profile of the ORL ?
SHJ = I can definitely help raise the profile of ORL. With a massive forces population at Brize Norton and Tinder, there is no limit to where we can take it!
BA = Can you tell us 5 thinks about the Club?
SJH = 1, Tommos sweets are the best closely followed by Riceys. 2, The unsung heroes such as Tim, Tess and the many girlfriends and Uni boys and girls who help on match days should be praised. 3, We have some of the warmest changing rooms on the planet. 4, We also have the stinkiest changing rooms when Sam Blaney makes a donation or two?? 5,
We could make a sequel of Arachnaphobia with the amount of cobwebs in the main stand!
BA = What would you like from the ORL Blue Army ?
SJH = The Blue Army are amazing. Vocally magnificent, always there home and away. Numbers maybe small but they will grow in time.
BA = Is there anything you would like to say to the Club, the player and are supporter ?
SJH = Oxford RL are a club of the future there is no doubt. To those players who are moving on next season, thanks for everything, keep in touch and all the best at your new clubs
Thank you Ozzy for you time.
