| Thanks for those links.
I wonder if the RFL has a similar list of all those rugby league players who died in both world wars.
If not they should consider producing one in time for the centenary of the outbreak of the First World war in 2014.

| My thoughts exactly.
From what that says in the attached article and from what I have gathered elsewhere, five or six members in total from the 1914 Lions Tour to Australia were later to die during WW1
This includes Billy Jarman of Leeds ...

Yeah I went to see his grave (well, name on the monument) at Thiepval, he's my great grandad's brother (I think that make him my great-great uncle?).
I completely agree the RFL should do something similar btw.

| Oliver Morris died in WW2, as did another Leeds player called Toothill. There may be other Leeds players as well - the Ken Dalby books may be the best source to look.

I wonder how many of those who played in the match in the photo had subsequent health issues caused by radiation and fall out. It cant be amazingly healthy to play sport at a nuclear bomb epicentre site

Sadly the first volume of The Headingley Story that covers formation and through the First World War is vague about those players never to play again.
The information about Billy Jarman came from Phil Caplan / Peter Smith's book '100 Leeds Rugby League Club Greats' which is about 12 years old now.
The club do make a point about commemorating both Les Adams and Oliver Morris every November, it is just there are First World War loss(es) to remember too at this time.

True, but given at the time there'd been very few serious nuclear detonations both at war or for research, the long term health effects of radiation would have been beyond medical science of the day.
On the other hand, given radioactive half lives, background radiation may well have been significantly lower that the immediate aftermath of the H-Bomb being dropped.
