I agree, I have said it hundreds of times the truer and more important figure for me is the FULL PAYING speccies and not all the freebies and cheap deals which yer are bums on seats but not necessarily your fan base.
Saying that what do people sit up and notice?
The attendance no matter who paid or not.
I think next year we should target a game against say Gateshead for free entry and get 3K or 4K down to BOOST our attendance figures to make us look good, I hate it but you have to 'play the game'. As a season tickt holder i have no issue with this as long as it is a one off.

| Im sure we can spin all this, but its pretty disapointing to me that we didnt get a few bigger numbers in there, perhaps tv, kick off times and weather has an impact too, added to the lack of special offers for speccies this year.
We should have had a couple of big crowds in, and average 500 more, i dont think our late season form helped things either.
Look at how we take so many away, and what we did at Cas, theres untapped potential for sure.

Wigans support is excellent, saying that 20 years of having top teams they should stay loyal I suppose.
Do Catalans really get that many, has anybody ever been there at all?
Harlequins must be struggling on those crowds, come on we did, it cost us our SL place, they surely cannot carry on on sub 5K crowds?
This must have been the worst season in many years for attendances?
I think it has been our league that has been the most competitive and interesting this year. just think we averaged just over 1K less than Harlequins who will get up to 1K in aways fans.

Yes-Went to watch Rhinos play them, there is a massive fan base here, Catalan flags literally on all the street corners, in the bars and shops, the fan base and interest is there and its well organised with free buses into the ground from Perpignan. They also play every Saturday evening at Home so the locals know exactly when they are on!
It really is working here and it will be great when the Magic weekend goes to Barcelona next.
Did you not see the recent attendance when Wire played Catalan in Barcelona or do you choose not to believe?

| whilst i agree with most of what you anti-expansionists say, to knock catalans support is ludicrous. The coverage of the game there and general interest and visibility of rugby league and catalans puts the so called heartland of rugby league to shame.

Yeah looking at the figures it's because on the RFL website the attendance for the Home game versus whitehaven is reported as 2910 and not the 3202 as stated on the Barrow site.
With that figure it does go to 2280 with rounding up. On my figures it would be 2279 as you can't have half a person.

I was only asking, I think they are the exception to the rule of expansion clubs as they are in a RL hotbed so fair enough.
Not so Toulouse.
As for the game in Barcelona I met a guy at the Toulouse v Fax game who was a Wigan fan from the midlands and he went to that game and said he was surprised the crowd was stated as 18,000 he thought more like 13,000 and he added the game was a fiver or equivalent, so yer a good attendance not disputing that but it was probably the novelty value come on.
I know I sound very negative but people seem to be clutching at any straw regards expansion like hey RFL can we count all the ants to get a big crowd today?
RFL - er yer thats fine just make sure you get BIG NUMBERS.
Cynical?
You bet.

Er, not in my opinion.
What this actually does is most English club fans know that this is a good weekend away and will now plan it in their diaries which does give them good home crowds (okay they have a pretty good amount of home fans themselves)
But....
How many do they bring to their away games. I was at the Bradford v Catalans game and I struggled to count more than 4.
This is not really good for expansion...

Yes we enjoyed our trip to France but in these hard times there are only so many 'trips' that you can afford and if you are SL club fan you have the game in France (would people go twice if Toulouse get into SL?), a trip to now Newport, Harlequins in London, Magic weekend, Wembley and the SL Grand Final its expensive. Plus will you go every year to France???
I think the RFL are forgetting this and likeyou say who comes to the away games???
Nobody except Directors and a few friends.

I agree. I think another French club in the Superleague will mean that English based fans will need to make a decision on the one they go to see, and will only mean a derby match for the French teams.
I will certainly be looking to go to Toulouse next year as I couldnt make it this year (my sons wedding, which was very inconsiderate of him), but you have to question whether people can make it year on year, when there are other demands on their finances.

My own view on this is keep Catalans in Sl and keep Toulouse in the Championship or Championship 1 if they are not good enough but NOT in SL.
I enjoyed our trip there and will go again it is a good trip, made better by us winning. But they are in no way a SL club in the making.

The other games avaerage where all equal with an extra maybe 500 - 750 tops for those two, good marketing is all!
Maybe Fax should of done likewise? Get a big crowd put on a 70 - 0 win or dranatic 2nd half come back and bring them back in
Still though i'll never beleive the attendance given from our cup semi as that was at least 500 short of how many where there!

Toulouse 5074
Sheffield 3181
Leigh 4354
Batley 2901
Barrow 3290
Gateshead 5236
Fev 3278
Donny 3453
Halifax 4039
Haven 3275
Average 3808
Widnes did well with attendances this year. Especially with moving the games away from Sunday. Definitely the highest in the league. However the two 5000+ gates were clear promotions just based on figures on the other games. If you take them out of the equation the average figure drops to 3471, which looking at the figures looks more like the actual attendance without promotion. Two big gates for halifax and leigh and the rest around 3000.
