Phone contract up for renewal couple months time, I know this as i get at least 1-2 calls everyday from cpw/orange wanting me to upgrade. Not sure which are genuine as they don't get past asking for my details. Very annoying so far!

I agree. I would advise that you don't ever upgrade or buy a phone deal on an incoming call.

Mobile phone resellers will often say they are calling from the network when they are not. They will receive commission from the network for connecting you, but you are on dangerous ground when it comes to things like receiving the phone or gifts they promise.

If you know you are due an upgrade and want one, just ring them.

I had that an old phone but rather than upgrading the model, I got them to knock a tenner off my bill each month in return for keeping my old phone.

any thoughts on HTC sensation, or an Xperia Ray? two reccomendations from the nice lady at carphone warhouse,

I like the HTC better, don't like the Xperia range at all, their software tweaks are very annoying and aren't very nice to use (Timescape and mediascape etc).

I'bve got a 5800 nokia, which is up in january, as daft as it sounds i'm anti iPhone, and i've been looking round for similar to what i use now, (mainly music and taking photos as well as calling) my old man has got one of the lower end HTC handsets and i've not been bowled over with the Android system on there, but from the ones i've looked at in the carphone whorehouse, the upper end seems to be more sensible and responsive,

when i mentioned music and photos thats when the Ray was suggested.

am i right in saying the sensation is top of the range HTC, any other models slightly less pricey or in the upper echelons.

I've got the sensation and as my first proper smartphone, I love it. Battery life isn't fantastic and I haven't worked out how to stop it trying to connect to any open wifi signal (thereby stopping the network connection), but the camera is good, Android apps I've got are good, genrerally can't fault it.

Do the HTC's not have the 'Power Control' widget, which is a bar with on/off switches for wi-fi, bluetooth, gps, automatic updates and screen brightness?

With Android phones there are also several really good utilites on the app market where you can set profiles for such things as those mentioned. So for example you can say that between 12pm and 8am to turn off everything as you'll be asleep.

I have the Sensation and its fantastic, the battery life is a slight issue but there are ways of getting around this (not least getting yourself a spare). You should be able to get some fantastic deals online and see if the high street stores or your provider can match/beat them if you want to go down that route. It's super fast and responsive, and I've had it for a good few months now and not had one instance of it crashing or switching itself off etc. Though apple fanboys will tell you that Android doesn't have as many apps, all of the important ones (and free ones at that) are generally available for both platforms these days. There are two new versions of the Sensation being released soon, one with an even bigger screen and one with something called beats audio, which i think is something that has been advertised recently on laptops, so you may even be able to get a better deal once they come out.

ios5 people happy with it?

I went from from a Samsung galaxy Europa and got a new 64GB iPhone 4S and glad that I have. iCloud works fine, allowed me to download music and videos I had previously bought but deleted by mistake ( forgot to back up to ext hard drive) no crashes or anything, unlike the Samsung which crashed all the time. Not bothered with Siri yet.

That is absolutely shocking. Every phone will get dropped from time to time, the screen on the iPhone really has very little durability.

I wonder what all the Apple fanboys on the Steve Jobs thread will make of it. I can hear it now, "Apple revolutionised the art of buying a replacement phone off ebay for £300".

Putting it in a case seems the obvious thing to do, but they detract from the physical coolness of the phone, which for Apple phones is half the point of the thing.

What I don't understand is why anyone would take out a 2 year deal on a 4s, when the 5 will be out in 6 months?

Fact is, most mobile operators are tying people into 18-24 month contracts. Whatever you get your phone will cease to be the latest model before your contract expires. My HTC Desire was old hat almost immediately, but it still does a bloody good job and is a great phone.

That said, anyone so desperate to get the latest iPhone needs to get out more.

I don't know why anti Apple people get so uppity about people wanting a new Apple product. If you don't like it, fine, but the reaction of some people is laughable.

I think it's unlikely to be released until next summer, maybe even 12 months away, who knows.

I can see it being rushed out, Apple are heavily investing into Contactless payment (NFC) which they intend to start adding into their devices, the 2012 Olympic village is being kitted out with Contactless payment (NFC), they won't want to miss it and I'm not sure it's something they can just add into their current phones by way of an update, hence the 5.

The day anti-Apple people stop getting uppity about people wanting a new Apple product will be the same day people who do have an iPhone stop asking "why didn't you get an iPhone" when you get a new phone or when you buy a Galaxy S they say "it's just a complete copy of the iPhone" which is pretty much what happened to me when I got mine!

Largely on the button. I'd happily get an iphone if they refreshed how the OS looks etc once in a while and offered contracts that were competitive/comparative to other smart/super-phones. I understand the desirability of the iphone (and other apple products) in terms of its ease of use and the way they 'just work' but 90% of other such high end devices are more than capable of matching if not improving on this these days. I think what makes most of the so-called 'anti-apple' people speak out is that they can see beyond the clever marketing tactics employed by apple and the blind faith many iphone owners have in the product. And then there's the bandwagonning linked to what Adam says, the iphone has grown into something beyond a simple (or in this case rather complex) handheld telephone and is as much a badge of honour for fashionistas, including that rather vocal lot, the celebrities.

Anyway, back to the matter of handsets... Adam the Samsung Galaxy S2 is a superb piece of kit, i was torn between it and the HTC Sensation that I ended up choosing because of the great job HTC have done in skinning Android/Gingerbread with their Sense UI. There is little between the two, but inevitably they are both being surpassed...
