Got this today. 40 remakes of tracks by The Specials in aid of the Teenage Charity Trust. Yes, there are the predictable straight ska covers, but the vast majority take the original and do something new with it - house version of Skinhead Moonstomp or a punk take on Too Much, Too Young, or perhaps a slightly jazzy version of Dawning Of A New Era? I've not finished it yet, I've been too busy hitting the replay button on a few of the tracks, but it's all good so far.
All on there, and a project worth supporting.

You won't catch me disagreeing with this. Though the latest E.P. Long Live The King is a bit of a let down. May I suggest you try Tarkio or further back Happy Cactus for previous bands of lead singer Colin Meloy.

IMO the Decemberists went off the boil after [iThe Crane Wife[/i. Hated [iHazards, [/iand [iThe King Is Dead[/i didn't really excite in the same way as their earlier records - too MOR Americana for me.

I liked Hazards, it was something he's always wanted to do so he did it. Yes it wasn't 'mainstream' a la Picaresque but he wasn't trying to so anything other than what he wanted to. I have to agree with you on The King Is Dead though, there was something missing there.
What is your take on the 'Always The Bridesmaid' series of songs? They were released in 2008 and in my opinion they are very good and traditional decemberists in my eyes. Valerie Plame being my personal favourite.

| Excellent news on Seven Day Weekend, they seem to be gathering a bit of a fan base on the quiet?
Roll on next Friday, off to see Jim Jones Revue in York, at last... Is anyone else going?

Also as I suggested previously, check out Tarkio. They are a bit more twee and folky I would suggest, but he brought 'My Mother Was A Chinese Trapeze Artist' across from Tarkio to The Decemberists and it appeared on their 5 Songs EP and in my eyes, or should that be ears, Tarkio's version is ever so slightly better.

Getting there, massive fan bases in Birmingham and London, London on 17th July (first time!), and hopefully Brum in same month.
Hand picked by Gavin in The Blackout to play with him on a special acoustic show on 19th this month too, so pretty important month!

So I'm told. I've been a fan since The Princess & The Frog, but not had chance to see them previous.

I'm going, third time I'll have seen them. Not a huge fan of Fibbers now it's been re-done, but hopefully it will be a good gig.
Anyone else checked out CW Stoneking?

| I'll be the shaven headed, bearded bloke with the camera round his neck tying to look like a serious photographer. I'm guessing the ale will be crap fizz?
I just know I'm likely to hit someone with the camera again before the gig is over, thank god Sony make strong ones.

I don't know if you've been to Fibbers before, but they've put the stage at the opposite end which is confusing when you've known Fibbers for a while, and where the stage used to be it's a "chill out" area. Almost like they are trying to turn it into a nightclub.

Great video too. Apparently he's even better live?
I heard about him last year but ignored him as my friends who'd listened/watched him said it was a white man playing blues. Which reminds me of Eric Clapton so it put me right off! I'd say it's more Ragtime/New Orleans than straightforward blues.
