Personally, I think Wiggins will win it due to Cycling's current popularity, Murray will take second and Farah will be third....My own vote will go with Murray, who has had a fantastic year and is playing in an exceptional era for his sport....Wiggins acheivement is a fine one, but let's face it, cycling is a sport with a huge question mark over it with regards to its drug problem and also Wiggins' victory had a huge amount to do with a team rather than just his own individual performance.

I can't find the story now, but during the paralympics I read a story about a 'greeter' or helper who had been asigned to one of the minor nations. On their arrival he discovered that they didn't have suitable equipment or training facilities.
With no prompting, he organised both - including, IIRC, proper racing wheelchairs - and as a result was made the envoy for the games.

If anyone sums up the Olympic and sporting spirit, that man is the one.

It should be Tomkins, but the biased media will never let that happen.

How some bloke can be even considered for riding his bike, when there are guys that put their bodies on the line week in week out playing rugby league with no credit, is staggering.

If not Tomkins then Westwood or Roby.

Like many others, I know people who gave up holidays and other free time to be 'Games Makers': contrast them and the mess of G4S etc, and I think you have the best and the worst of the country.

My vote would be for Murray, he reached 3 major finals and a semi, winning one. Olympic gold and silver medalist. Throw in his teary apology to the Wimbledon crowd and thats your winner right there. You cant take away Wiggins acheivements but Murray has had a special year.

when Botham won in 1981 after the Ashes success he had help from his team mates - England wouldn't have won without the likes of Old, Dilley, Willey & Willis etc helping out

I can't think of a single professional sports person who doesn't operate as part of a team.

I remember commenting at the time that in any other year he'd be a cert for Sports Personality.

As Robinosn has already mentioned, Murray's lack of personality should rule him out.
But, hey, winning a Grand Slam event in a girl's sport where the two top players are missing, should clinch it.


There have been far too many dodgy winners of this irrelevance in past years for me to have any enthusiasm about it at all.

That was more about someone at the Beeb lining themselves up for a gong than anything to with sport or endeavour.
