Wigan Warriors won their 19th Challenge Cup with a 16-0 win over Hull FC in an error-strewn game at Wembley Stadium.
A first half try from Iain Thornley and three kicks from Pat Richards guided Wigan to victory in an error-strewn game before Sam Tomkins wrapped up the match by scoring with the final possession of the game.
Hull FC’s Wembley hoodoo continues as the black and whites have still failed to win a final on the hallowed turf. The black and white went into the game with a four-match winning streak but looked a far cry from the side that turned over Warrington in the semi-final last month as they made error after error.
Wigan had close to 70 per cent possession after 20 minutes as they made their breakthrough with Thornley’s try.
Hull battled through the final hour of the game but slippery conditions worked against them as the majority of FC’s players were guilty of knocking the ball on and gifting possession back to the Warriors.
Tomkins wrapped up Wigan’s 19th trophy win in the first ‘nil-ing’ in a Challenge Cup Final since their 1989 success over St Helens.
Richards started the game by kicking the ball out on the full giving FC a penalty on halfway. Hull attacked the Wigan line but Danny Houghton was stopped just short after a run from dummy-half on the last tackle.
Wigan were then given a penalty for a high tackle and drove up field. Blake Green slotted a kick through on the last tackle and it was knocked into the air by the returning Ben Crooks. Richards got to the ball first but was held up in goal by Jason Crookes. The cherry and whites then forced a goal-line drop out with their next set as they kept the pressure up on Hull.
The Warriors forced another two sets but Thornley knocked on in a tackle giving Hull some much needed ball after withstanding Wigan’s attack.
Wigan’s pressure eventually told after 20 minutes and Thornley scored the first try of the afternoon. The centre took advantage of a break up in play after a misplaced pass from Green and he shrugged off an attempted tackle from Danny Tickle to score in the corner.
Shaun Wane’s side enjoyed nearly 60 per cent of possession in the first half but the Warriors struggled to break through Hull’s stern defence.
The black and whites proved their own worst enemies in the first half as many players were guilty of making simple errors and gifting possession back to the Warriors.
Hull offered glimpses of attacking flair towards the end of the half after a kick-through from Jay Pitts forced a penalty for obstruction but Jacob Miller knocked-on with Hull’s first tackle in the following set.
Matty Smith attempted a drop-goal with the last kick of the half but his attempt was just wide of the posts and the sides went in with Wigan 6-0 ahead at half time.
Wigan started the second half with a penalty from Richards to put them 8-0 up after Richard Whiting came in with a late hit on Smith.
Hull were nearly brought back into the game after a superb break from Jamie Shaul. The youngster cleared Wigan’s line and sprinted 70 metres for the line with Sean O’Loughlin and Josh Charnley chasing. Hull’s full back came within 10 metres of the line but Charnley came in and managed to bat the ball out of Shaul’s hands.
Darrell Goulding was stretchered off just before the hour mark after being knocked out in a collision with Kirk Yeaman.
Richards made it three kicks from three attempts with another penalty after O’Loughlin was picked up over the horizontal to put Wigan 10-0 ahead with just 19 minutes of the game left.
Just as Hull began to put pressure on Wigan’s defence late in the second half the black and whites forced a goal line drop out. But from the resulting kick a knock-on from Daniel Holdsworth summed up a poor performance from Hull FC as they went down with a whimper.
Wigan kept the pressure on Hull’s line in the final five minutes and Tomkins scored with the final touch of the game after taking Green’s kick on the last tackle and darting through Hull’s defence to score next to the posts cuing frantic celebrations from the Wigan players in front of their fans.
