Wigan brought an end to Leeds’ undefeated Magic Weekend history with a 20-16 win in the final match of the event.
Unusually the Warriors failed to score in the second half but held out thanks to an eight point advantage instated before the break.
Wigan started the game well forcing two early goal-line drop outs, the second leading to their eighth minute opening try.
Centre, Iain Thornley seemed to have been stopped by the Leeds defence but managed to flick the ball out to prolific try scorer, Sam Tomkins who manoeuvred his way to the try line.
The Rhinos hopes of victory appeared to take a hit when skipper, Kevin Sinfield was brought down by the shoulder of Michael McIlorum who was warned by the referee.
But Sinfield recovered, taking the two points on offer at the penalty before scoring himself five minutes later. He then kicked the resultant conversion to give his side a slender 8-6 advantage.
The Warriors hit back instantly taking advantage of an overlap on the left, Sam
Tomkins sending in Pat Richards who in turn hit the touchline conversion.
Richards then hit a penalty goal to take the score to increase his side’s lead to 14-8 with ten to go until the break.
Kallum Watkins managed to stay inside the field for what must be one of the best finishes of the season to put his side two points behind but Richards hit another penalty.
Then seconds before the half time hooter, Wigan charged down a hopeful Leeds clearance, Matty Smith picking up the ball to assist the pacey Josh Charnley.
Wigan thought they had achieved the perfect boost to kickstart the second stanza but young stand-off, Sam Powell had his try disallowed for obstruction.
And in total contrast, the Rhinos moved just four points behind thanks to Joe Vickey to usher a gentle reminder that they weren’t yet out of it.
Ben Flower was then penalised for a late tackle on kicking Kevin Sinfield and with a penalty 15 metres from the line, Leeds had a great opportunity to score.
Their last tackle play yielded a drop out but an error from young Liam Sutcliffe turned the ball straight back over.
The Rhinos narrowly survived another Wigan assault, forcing Michael McIlorum to spill the ball a metre short of the line and then thought they had scored themselves after Joel Moon sent in Danny McGuire.
Again, video-referee, Ian Smith was called upon for a possible obstruction and he after several views, decided the try should not stand.
Wigan ran the clock down by a minute from the penalty but with Pat Richards off the field with a gash to the eye, Sam Tomkins attempt from half way sailed to the left of the sticks.
