With Richard Lewis leaving the RFL at the end of April, here's something from the sang-et-or archives in tribute to the man:

I know this isn't going to be popular and it's not fashionable, but Lewis leaves the RFL with record breaking TV contracts and with more people watching, viewing and participating in rugby league than ever before. He joined with the game 2 million in debt and only recently oversaw a 30 million handout to the Super League clubs. His time in charge has in no way been perfect, but neither has it been the apocolyptic disaster many are making it out to be. There's been a lot of stored up anger and bad blood freed today with one journalist claiming he'd overseen the ruin of Scotland and Ireland. Lewis has always been a great supporter of expansion but that has at times been to the detriment of more established clubs within the game. I think some of those clubs have taken advantage of this to mask some of their own problems and throw the blame for their own inadequacies on Lewis and the RFL. Richard Lewis's replacement needs to be up for the challenge (and believe me, it's quite a challenge), commercially savvy and possess huge political skill. Huge battles ahead. No time for a safe option.

He leaves the game in a better state than it was before he arrived, that is for sure, but there is plenty still wrong. Basically, you can find enough things to support your argument that he's been an unqualified success or that he's been a total disaster. The truth lies between these two extremes.
