Players of Clints quality sometimes have an major ego with them, to be fair to him he earned the right to have that swagger about him in his first three years with the club. I get the feeling that some rovers fans would be happy to have retained Mariano and Cook and lost the likes of Clint.

It almost certainly will only be a minority who will see it that way, the vast majority will be very sad to see him go imo, me included.
Clint has been a fantastic player for the club and if you have followed the game long enough and even played yourself then you would know that you often find that some, though not all special players with ability often have that swagger about them, its what sets them appart from the mundane rest.

Clint is an excellent player on his day no question and one of the best imports , playing wise , we have had since our return to SL but certainly as far as this season goes the above statement is completely untrue..
In fact if Clint and JM had reigned their egos and self interest in sometime ago perhaps we might be a lot further ahead and they would both be still with us..
He has been well worth his presence for his professionalism with regards the playing of the game and the guidance he has passed to the likes of Taylor and Cox but he could do worse than look at Ben Galea for the meaning of "total" professional and clubman..

33 in April - worth a one-year deal as a stop-gap maybe, but would he relocate for that?
Scott Moore is rumoured to be leaving Saints for Salford - he'd have been a good addition. OTOH, there's no point making discipline a big theme of your new coaching appointment and then lumbering him with players who take the pee.
Much as I think getting a good British hooker would be excellent, good takes priority over British if it comes down to a choice. Withers is probably the best option, unless Clinton's quota and non-fed spot were freed up. Even then, we're not going to sign Cameron Smith.

| With the loss of Newton(which is a major one)I would love to see Taylor and Cox starting in our backrow with Galea at LF giving them direction, some will say maybe its to early for Cox to hold down a regular place but throw him in at the deep end for me!!!

Only the complete tools would think this. Newton was by far our most impressive signing at the time (including Vella), to capture a player of his calibre at the age he came at was an awesome piece of business for the club. I rate Newton in the top 10 players that have played for this club (I'm in my 50's). If someone had told Rovers fans in 2005 that by 2011 we would be thanking the likes of Netwon, Vella, Briscoe for their service and had already said farewell to Willie Mason, I would have called for the straight jackets.
For whatever reason Newton is leaving, I think he has been superb for us and I will always believe we have been lucky to have such players here. Good luck to him at Penrith.

Not in the 2nd row. Spend the Newton money on a good, experienced player with similar skills to Newton.

Newton was exempt from the quotas so, like Fisher and Vella, has to be replaced with a Brit or other exempted player (like O'Hara or Withers, if he joins too).
I'm not sure who we could get. And I'm really hoping that Taylor, Watts, Cox and J. Hodgson kick on and provide the basis of a youthful, dynamic, energetic pack. Galea will provide plenty of experience next year. O'Hara and probably Withers too, beyond that. And I'm excited about Paea, if that is confirmed.
There's nobody on the OOC list who would offer what Newton has, unfortunately.

Newton was not OOC, why not approach a club about a contracted player like Penrith did.

I would imagine that depends on what budget where looking to spend this coming season but it is something we have done in the past.

If Gareth Ellis is feeling homesick or something, then definately. In SL it'd mean paying a fee - for somebody like Newton, a big fee.
When you have a decent production line (which hopefully we're seeing the first signs of), you should be signing one or two less players from other clubs than depart each year.
Maybe Scott Taylor takes the 11 shirt, Cox gets Taylor's 22 and Ollett, Cox's 27.
I'm not sure there is a better (realistic) option out there. Taylor looks the part from what I've seen so far.

| we are making a similar mistake as we did in 2007/8 and letting too many go at the same time in my opinion...
Briscoe
Vella
Fox
Newton
Fisher
thats five first teamers for deff
then include
Cockayne
Mason
Colbon(rumoured to have signed at quins)
that is a lot of space on the cap to fill, and i can`t see the players that have already signed have taken that much up tbh.
So i reckon we will have another bitty season next year as new players are assimilated into the team/squad. we had this problem in 2008 , bradford and salford have had that problem this year and now we will have it again next year

Difference between now and then is that we have kids coming through capable of filling some of the gaps. I've added to your post players who've come in (or are heavily tipped to do so) to do equivalent jobs - if it is on less money, then bonus. The cap is a limit, not a target. G. Horne will replace Matt Cook, too. We need to leave some spots and cash free for the new coach.
Teams need to renew and you get periods of transition. I was excited about the players we signed for 2008 and I am again now.

| Just read in the rugby press that Tony Martin is a target for us. Seems a strange one unless the plan is to move him back to full back where he started his career.

Rovers will have a huge squad next year IMO (in terms of numbers, not bulk). With the number and seniority of players going out vs those coming in, and Hudgell guaranteeing a full cap spend in the papers, there must be absolutely loads to go at and a few big names to come in.

Yes!, he did say that we will be spending to the cap and money will be made available to the new coach to spend on new players, he also said that several names had been thrown at the club but any future descisions regarding new players will be made by the new coach who, may possibly have one or two of his own in mind.

| I known there is one player who has played in most of Leeds games this season is waiting to see who the new coach is. Then he may sign. Same as Paea and Withers. New coach coming in will bring at least 2 players in if form goes to plan.
I know we are a good option for players as we have cash to spend and a great reputation of looking after over seas players.....Big Willie the exception. But there again he did us no favours either.
