| Just tried to watch a bit of the T20 on SS1, don't get it. Quietly happy that I'll be leaving it to watch the Rugby.
Anyone see the incident on Hedon road? I got caught up in the tailbacks and saw the 4 smiling chavs happy with their dent in the central reservation, at least they were ok.

Hmm.
(Feeling down, tonight, Smallie. More excited about the Exiles match then I was for the derby. It's all wrong. )

Nice one Roofs, mind you I used to think I had loads of time and then I would find myself with a week left and tied to the computer writing frantically
My personal (limited) knowledge on it is, when a self harmer cuts it is to seek relief, the feeling is very similar to that of an orgasm, it is euphoria. The build up is similar to a smoker trying to quit, the craving starts and the build up just gets worse. It is very much a controlling condition similar to that of eating disorders where the client gets satisfaction for the complete control over the body (even if is has serious consequences) and generally the client has very little control in most aspects of their lives. It is indeed a mental illness and there are often contributing factors prior, eg divorce, unemployment, abuse, war etc...Like eating disorders it generally affects females not sure about the exact figures but I am sure it is similar figures to eating disorders (90-95% of clients with eating disorders are females) I am aware recently there have been several cases of soldiers self harming (suffering PSD), also sadly cases of very young children who are being bullied at school. More often than not the harmer always cuts the forearms which indicates that it is a cry for help as it is in a visible area.

Thanks for that BB, much appreciated. Yeah that all sounds spot-on from what I've been reading. Amongst the books I've loaned out a DVD from Uni library, it's a BBC doc from about 2009 presented by Meera Syal (she was in Goodness Gracious Me amongst other things), absolutely fascinating. Like you say it does seem to affect women more than men, and also in some cases members of ethnic minority groups more than the rest of the population.
Not wanting to curse myself but I think over the years I've learned to use critical analysis fairly well, i.e. picking things out of statements that I wouldn't have done when was younger, e.g. a girl in the doc dismissing Meera's question / suggestion that it is linked to MH problems, but then saying that it's a coping mechanism for her depression (a MH condition surely?!).
Re the cry for help I've found that interesting too. In many cases you'll be right, but have also read that for a lot of sufferers it's a very private behaviour which they do everything to disguise, suggesting that for them it's not about getting the attention of others?
Think it's cost me about £500 over the last two years to do the UFA but am so glad I have, learned so much from it.

Sadly MH problems are increasing in ethnic minorities, they are suffering various mental health conditions due to variable reasons however it is emerging that direct and indirect racism within society is contributing to this (hence my passion when discussing racism)..
Your critical analysis is indeed correct, depression is indeed a mental health condition. It is just labelled in the DSM differently, eg Unipolar, Bipolar etc....1-5 people will suffer an episode of unipolar in their lifetime brought on by death, divorce etc.... individual cases manifest themselves in different ways, and one way could be self -harming...
I was generalising about it being a cry for help..I personally suspect many will start to harm in private however we have to consider why the client harms on the forearms ? if they really wanted to hide would they not do it on their stomachs , bottoms ?...and that is the thing Roof no cases are particularly identical, clients have different reason for doing it, most do forearms, but some don't..these are the points you need to raise, there are no answers, think overt/covert, that is the difference when dealing with the mind, you can never be 100% because you never really know I could lie to you and you would not know, hence when dealing with the mind evidence and theories are gathered and generally it is generalisations which we deal with.
I am really please you are enjoying the course and I am sure you will carry on with your studies one way or another.

Yeah definitely BB. With ethnic minorities I'd presumed before reading that racism would potentially be a factor. Apparantly too there can be other factors, e.g. 'social norms' where some can feel under great pressure to follow in parents' footsteps or do what their parents want for them (e.g. career choice, arranged marriage etc), which can only imagine must be very, very stressful if you want to do something completely different to their views with your life.
That's it, all of us get depressed at some point but it's still (annoyingly) seen by some as weakness. They say you learn something new every day BB, and in a sec I'm gonna look up unipolar on Google (first time I've heard of it tbh ), so I thank you.
Yeah, it is strange like you say re cutting, i.e. your forearms are often exposed, whereas upper arms or other areas it'd be easier to keep covered, esp in summer. Not relevant to that, but it seems in some cases harmers see their scars as symbolic, e.g. a woman on the doc had memories of each one such as want she was going through and experiencing at that time. Totally agree, am always careful to stress that we are not generalising or stereotyping when making observations or analysing, just different views and possible correlations eh. (was certainly the case with Forensic Psychology essay e.g. about common psychopathy symptoms).
Thanks BB, really appreciate it. Hope you're looking forward to September.

A great book which I would recommend for mental health is Abnormal Psychology..Comer (it was like a bible to me )..most literature in MH is American, it is an area which we have been slow to understand and treat in this country
It explains historically how we used to deal with MH, basically we locked them up like animals, historically what we considered a MH condition, amazingly it was during my lifetime it was illegal to be a homosexual and homosexuals were considered perverts (this was actually used in the Moors Murderers cases, Brady claimed one of his victims Edward..forot his last name was a homosexual)..It also explains how the DSM was created and list all the mental illnesses and the most common signs..
Social norms is a great area to study, as they are not laws, different groups will have different norms and values which as you have clearly pointed out leads to all kinds of issues arising.
Yes I am looking forward to September, decided to start drinking cider again just to get into the swing of things again

Trust me that is quite tame compared to what goes around in my head.
I went for long stripy dress and cardi in the end, of course it didn't rain so I would have been safe.
Had an excellent time, sat next to a group of ladies from Hull who were lovely and didn't mind the zillion trips to the toilet my rather weak bladdered friend made.
Robbie was rather good, although I do feel he is looking rather Toad like in his old age, I can see him zooming around in a car chasing Ratty & Moley through the woods, before stopping off at Badgers Den for a cup of tea.
Food and drink were exortionate prices, 17 English Pounds for a bottle of Vino
Pet Shop Boys were rather good too.

Excellent, cheers BB, will have a look on Amazon etc for that.
Crazy how attitudes / laws used to be eh. Re social norms yeah, hard to believe how much different ethnic groups for example contrast in terms of beliefs and values e.g. an Asian British girl in that documentary was a single mum, and apparantly it was as though she had disgraced and shamed her family, whereas in white British culture it generally seems very acceptable (as it should be IMO).
Lol, ace. Felt gutted the other day cos I found out that my library card expires 31st August so after that I'm technically no longer a part-time student. If I pass the UFA there won't really be anything for me to progress onto there apart from another degree or the counselling qualification (which I would absolutely love to do but just can't afford it with already having had the funding for the social work degree). Will have to do something in Sept though cos this part-time student thing carries too many advantages. I mean of course I do get a buzz from studying and learning, but the Yellow Card discounts in Haworth and Piper, the NUS card (allowing cheap entry into away games), I could go on.....

Probably more FC fans at a Rovers away game than what Quins took to Hull...

Sorry mate, didn't mean to reveal it on here, just thought if you have it on the back you must be comfortable with the name, + I thought it looked smart. In any case I'm not just saying it but I doubt that you have ever upset anyone on here anyway, seem to have a good rapport with both sets of fans from what I've seen.
Tbf though I do know what you mean, I've been tempted to get Roofs on the back before but thought it might be risky esp on Derby Day.

| I had my picture on here a couple of years back (colleague at work! displayed it, all in fun mind)...I perdsonally do not care if people know who I am, most do any-way...I have no problems arguing in the flesh as on here
At then end of the day we are all adults (I think), and we have disagreements and spats, but at the end of the day it is only a game!
