The excuse from his self-styled partner in all this has been problems with the banks; Gollum alluded to the cash being tied up in investments which were proving difficult to liquidate; and a third possibility is that he didn't have the cash himself but thought he had other investors lined up who would fund the purchase.

Doubt we'll ever get to the bottom of it. Unless, of course, he does eventually find the cash to try again...
