I aggree 100% with your sentiments, i cant stand someone telling me how and when to sing, i just dont believe that someone with a microphone prompting the crowd to sing or chant a song works better than leaving the supporters to generate their own atmosphere.
A good example among many which you can actualy see on you tube, is outside of the city hall in 1980, there was nobody telling the crowd what to sing or chant, but the noise and singing was electrifying that day.
Fast forward to 2006/7 when rovers were promoted to super league and the crowd ammassed outside the City hall as they did in 1980, there was a guy on the balcony with a microphone continuously trying to get the crowd to follow his instructions to sing and chant, it was to orchestrated and simply didn't work imo.
I think it is and always has been much better when left to the supporters to generate their own atmosphere.

I too dislike the trumpets but watching the game back on the two occasions it was played it got a good rallying cheer which IMO shows it did its job. I don't think we need gimmicks but with the atmosphere dropping over the past few years the club maybe thought it needed a bit of influence.

As has been pointed out before there are new chants that people are trying to learn and the Kris Welham song took a fair number of games before it got going. The old songs are still being sung and hopefully the team will give the fans something to shout about so we can get the whole crowd vocal!
