Starwars 'A New Hope' was released in 1977 I was born in 1975 so I also grew up with that.

I did try and watch one of the Transformers films, but the only bit contained within the film that I enjoyed was that rather cool sound they make when they "transform"
Star Wars is completely timeless, it doesn't matter how many times you've seen, you always end up watching it on TV when it's on, despite the fact you probably own the box-set and could watch it anytime.

| Disagree, Star Wars is pants and so is Star Trek.
This is of course [imy [/iopinion.
Think young lad Dave Scott stands a chance in the fastest man race tonight in the 9s? He seems rapid.
PAC should record this race on his phone for our viewing pleasure.

Sort of. The problem with Trek conventions is that they're dominated by Trekkies, who are pretty much the definition of cringeworthingly OTT fanboys/girls. For reference I suggest watching the movie Galaxy Quest.

| As Mild Rover and I have discussed at length in times past, Battle of the Planets takes some beating as epic sci-fi. I know it's a cartoon, but still.

| Quote ="Kosh"I never really got into the original Transformers. I started watching Beast Wars with my son and became a major fan - we still have the entire series stashed away on VHS somewhere. Some great humour in those scripts and some surprisingly adult storylines.'" You have 12 years on me Kosh as i'm not surprised
Quote ="Kosh"I was 15 when Star Wars came out and remain a right SW geek. Hate the newer trilogy, mind - except for the lightsaber battles. Must have seen the original films a hundred times.'" Same My Grandad use to sit me any my brother infront of his TV and put it on (He was a right tech head and had a VCR right from the start and he had recorded it of TV the first chance he had) to keep us occupied so we can both iterally recite it word for word including sounds at will.
Quote ="Kosh"I've also never been to a convention but have some mates who used to go in their youth - they used to dress up and everything. Never appealed to me.
'" Never been to one and never will.
I play World Of Warcraft and some of those fans are as NUTS as the converntion lot!!
As an example when the expansion before the last one came out they ran a story on it on BBC Breakfast and got a couple of gamers to come on and talk about it.
I was sat with my head in my hands as they appeared dressed as Elves and Orcs wearing the full gear including face paint and false ears and tusks, Everytime I mentioned it after that for months I got called a loon or worse folks thought we were all the same (See pmh's comments)
Conventions are much the same by all acounts and that is just TOO heavy for me, Infact I would go as far as to say the convention types give normal Sci-Fi fans a bad name.

Got a few episodes on DVD from ebay. Lots of nostalgia, but pretty rubbish to adult eyes - amazing the rough edges and plot holes a young mind can smooth over and fill in.
The original animated Transformers film remains the best, IMO. It's bonkers, but fun. The recent live action ones (not seen the third yet tbf) were decent 90 minute films trapped inside overblown 150 minute bodies.

No shame in the dressing up bit, me and my best friend dressed up as Cally and Jenna from Blake's 7, with the teleport bracelets, stun guns and we made our own Orac computer too. Oh, hang on, we were only 10 at the time.

It was one of those 'You have to be joking' moments.
The best comment was 'I queued all night dressed like this so I could get it on the first day'
I also had it on the first day (Actually I got it the previous day via pre-order via Amazon) but I didn't dress up like a menatlist!

I can do some chunks of dialogue complete with sounds effects and even score - not as much now as I don't get to watch it as often. I have a mate who used to be able to do the entire first movie verbatim if he was asked.

There are a few reasonably decent series around, but nothing really excellent at the moment. I've got Falling Skies on Sky+ and have some hopes for that given who's involved. Otherwise not much I agree.
There used to be a channel on Sky called Anime Central that had some cracking stuff on it, but they ran out of cash and folded a while back. Now there's no source for proper animated series. Nearest thing to Anime currently is Generator Rex on Cartoon Network. Looking forward to the next two weeks as I'm travelling in the USA and can get my fix of Anime from the Adult Swim stuff.

The original series of Star Trek is great. Went a bit mad when they did the Tribbles and that gangster episode but iconic. Whenever Mr B and I sit down to watch a film we have the "Who's wearing a red shirt"? discussion after the first 10 minutes.

The best of all the various [iTrek[/i series was, IMO, [iDeep Space Nine[/i. Actually showed the underbelly of the Federation and had real character development. ST:TNG was pretty good in a quintessentially 80's kind of way and had some stand-out episodes ([iMeasure of a Man[/i, [iThe Drumhead[/i, and [iThe Inner Light[/i to name three).
Least said about [iVoyager[/i and [iEnterprise[/i the better.
