| Had a few Winter Ales courtesy of Saltaire, a bottle of Abbott Reserve, Owd Rodger and Ventnor Sandrock ( courtesy of B & M ) and three good pints of Landlord at the Homestead. Unfortunately, my girth is expanding rapidly due to over-indulgence

| Bottles last night, with three out of four being from the Barnsley Beer Company (the exception being Batemans excellent seasonal brew Rosey Nosey).
The three Barnsley ales were ...
Barnsley Blonde 5.0% ... A blonde lightly fruited ale - too gassy for my taste.
Bee by Gum 4.3% ... Not dis-similar to the Blonde but slightly sweeter (the honey no doubt).
Coil Oil 3.9% ... The most interesting of the three. A porter with cinnamon and lime flavours amongst others.

| Darley's Ghost by Thorne Brewery is a very nice drink, and a warming 4.5%. It's currently on in the Red Lion.

| Darley's Ghost should be on any time now at the Bluecoat and the Pale Ale will be following. I've had some Barnsley bottles, Gary, the best being Owd Tyke and Nutty Stack. Owd Tyke reminds me of XXXB. which is no bad thing.
Visited the Church Inn at Uppermill in the Saddleworth district and what a pub! No wonder it's the Good Pub Guide's Own Brew Pub of 2010. It's the brewery tap of the Saddleworth brewery and I sampled just two of the eight that were all available at £1.50, including a porter, which runs Saltaire's Hazelnut and Coffee Porter very close, the chocolate malt sensation of Shaftbender at 5.4 % The George's Ale wasn't bad either. Had a glorious steak and ale pie to go with it. With log fires and stone walls, it's the archetypal country pub. The scenery btw, is fantastic too.

Reference the Barnsley bottled brews ... we've got Nutty Stack plus two others (Black Brite and Bobby Dazzler) left to try - won't be tonight though, the Tut n Shive beckons.
Will put the Church Inn on my list of pubs to visit after that review.

Forgot to mention that they had the very nice Ossett Big Red Ale 4.0% on last Sunday (plus H&H's Rocking Rudolph again).

| Its about on the site where Raynes motorcycles used to be - bought out by Carnell motorcycles. The Wilberforts clothing shop was in the same block. Remember any of them.

Things are vague since the mid-90s. I had to google it for sanity but the photo just confirms it wasn't there at that time. If it is on Cleveland Street the only pub I can remember was the Cleveland, never the most inviting of places. There wasn't much for lads on the lash at that side of town apart from the Tut, which was called something else in the 80s, it will come to me later, but I always liked.
Joplins IIRC.

| Had a couple of seasonal ales in the Tut (Sunday evening);
Camerons Light Christmas 3.6%
Springhead Polar Beer 3.8%
Preference was for the Camerons brew.
The Hobgoblin was on form this evening in the Sun Inn.

| Had a few new ales in York yesterday (well, new to me) ...
Dark Star Brewing Co Double Chocolate Stout 4.5% (The Maltings)
Shepherd Neame Rudolphs Reward 3.7% (The Old White Swan)
Leeds Brewery Ale Mary 4.5% (The Swan Inn)
Wentworth Ruby Red 4.0% & Springhead Chocolate Orange Twist 4.2% (The Punch Bowl- JDW's)
Best pint of the day ... Ale Mary
Worst pint of the day ... was the ridiculously priced Black Sheep in Coopers on York Station. £3.25 a pint and not the best kept pint of Black Sheep either. Pity the trains were all over the place (many on the main-line running late) or we might not have bothered!

| Mainly bottles for the past few days including a few familiar names (Abbott Reserve, Old Specklen Hen, Courage Directors, Batemans XXXB) - One new one that I really enjoyed was Wychwood Black Wych, a very nice Stout at 5.0%.

I don't know where you buy yours from Wanderer.....I know Morrisons used to do 4 for a fiver.....although I am not sure what they do now.
But Aldi do them for £1.39 each.....if that's any help.
Limited choice though.
