In the late 1980's in there push for promotion the Dons were scheduled to play a very important home league fixture against local rivals Sheffield Eagles.
Unfortunately due to a week of continuous heavy rain the Tattersfield pitch was flooded & it looked very likely that the game would have to be postponed.

What novel idea did the Dons come up with to ensure that the pitch was in a fit condition for the game to be played on the day scheduled?

It was a losing battle trying trying to pump the amount of water that was standing on the pitch.

So I had a thought that we needed something to displace the water & also help dry out the pitch & I came with the idea of finding some kind person who owned a helicopter to come & hover over the pitch & displace the water.
The problems was how do you find somebody local who would be prepared to do this so I put out an appeal on Radio Sheffield & Radio Hallam & within an hour I got a call from a gentleman from Bentley called Brian Todd who said he owned an helicopter & would be prepared to hover over the pitch for a couple of hours I explained to Brian the club couldn't afford to pay him for his time & fuel & he said dont worry about that just get me two tickets for the match, it was amazing to see the transformation in the condition of the pitch the game went ahead with the Dons winning 14-8 in front of a crowd of 2336.
