As incredibly laughable and incompetent the comedy officials were to allow the Dobson try it was the 6-0 penalty count against in the second half which cost us the match - 12 sets in a half isn't enough to win a game and it wasn't down to poor completion. It is actually testament to us in a way that we only lost in the last play of the game despite the forward pass debacle. Maybe PG can use Hull KR's perfect discipline performance in which they didn't transgress the laws on a single occasion as a benchmark for discipline going forward.

Happens all the time though. refs get a bee in their bonnet about something and suddenly the whole balance of a game swings in favour of one team on the back of 2 or 3 soft penaties. Wonder if seymour's "histrionics" (Think that was the word ganson used) when dobson smacked him in the mouth piissed ganson off.

That's exactly right. Ganson is the Daddy of all of them when it comes to bees in bonnets and swinging games away from teams. I've said a million times on here it's not the decisions that are given that change games but the ones that are not. The second half yesterday was a prime example thereof.

Exactly right, as was your inference about Rovers' 2nd half discipline. I'm a firm believer that a nil penalty count is suspicious, no matter how good and well-disciplined the team in question is. The very nature of RL as a physically aggressive, fast and exhausting sport means that penalties offences will occur reasonably regularly. Particularly as the game goes on, so the fact that it was the second half makes it all the more questionable. We are expected to believe that as fatigue started to kick in, contrary to typical RL fare, Rovers' discipline improved. Generally, this simply does not happen.

I'd be more concerned about the six penalties we did concede, rather than the zero we were awarded. It's not as if it's exactly uncharted territory for us, we have a fairly long history of dumb play at times.

I agree, I'm angrier about that than the actual officiating. Basically, he publically praised inept officiating as good for the game because it creates excitement and unpredictability. No, it undermines the sport at a fundamental level. If you can't manage to get your officials up to scratch you don't deserve to be a professional sport, it's a shambles of amateur standards.

No I won't, he pulled the ball out of his hands in a 2-on-1, that's a penalty. Westerman was penalised for the ball colliding with his knee as the Rovers player went to play it, FFS. That's the attacking player's responsibility to keep control of the ball. On the other he had his arm trapped by the attacker between ball and ribcage, then the penalty was played for as he removed his arm. This is creeping in a lot, along with the 'holding down the tackler and claiming interference Sam Tomkins style', and largely the referees would seem to decide based on club colours and player reputation.

Until a system is introduced which drops referees for poor refereeing then Ganson and Thaler will always be allowed to get away with poor performances. The trouble is that there are not enough quality referees in the game and until this is corrected I cannot see any changes for the good taking place.When the sponsorship of the game is given away for free advertising then something is very wrong at the top. The money generated from bet fair could of been spent on employing 10 more full time refs and full video analysis at matches ! This standard of refereeing would not be allowed in Australia. Gentle was correct in his analysis this decision alone did not cost you the game but did contribute same as the harsh decision to sin bin Dobson. great game, great entertainment, could be the best game of the weekend, (no doubt eddie and stevo will have their sts wigan bias derby glasses on), ganson and his linesman cost us a try, we were guilty of thinking the game was won, two major factors didnt help, from the kick off we let craig hall out jump one of our smallest players on the pitch when we should've put some one similar height opposite him, (we miss whiting in these situations), from this martin picked up his injury which rovers exploited for their try to make it 30-22, the game shouldn't have been stopped as there wasn't any interference so no complaints from me there, the dobson try should never have been allowed, regardless of who should've made the call, ganson should've been able to spot dobson in front of lovegrove when collecting the ball, if that try was ruled out i dare say we would've held on for a win, but it wasn't and after that i could only see another try coming and it was going to be from rovers as our players looked out on their feet and shell shocked!

but Ganson didn't have a 'poor performance' he made one big error which he admitted to - the rest of the game was ok - you don't suspend or drop a ref because of one bad call - if you did then there would n't be any refs available !

regarding Mt Thaler at Perpignan - yes, the pass may have been forward which led to the try but he also gave a couple of forward passes for HKR in the same game - CS admitted quite openly at the post match press interview that the best team won and had no quibbles with the result

Ganson does this time and time again, and frequently when reffing us. This isn't the first game he's cost us with his one-eyed application of the rules and I genuinely believe that he does it deliberately. He's the only ref in SL that I think is actually bent rather than just inept.
