Sam Obst wouldn't be a bad squad player at all (as also Phelps isn't) but we are scratching around in the Boxing day sales after all of the quality stuff has been picked over by the other big clubs.

i think obst would be good one year signing,always looks a good tricky player to me.

so..lets get this straight, we sign phelps on a one year and maybe obst......what the hell will happen next season then? will our "recruitment drive" be as impressive as it has been this year, i think its been pathetic to be honest....

Sam Obst is the only HB i can think of who might be available. I can't see Wakey releasing him at this stage, perhaps before xmas, but not now

I think Lee Williams should be our back-up. just so long as we don't put too much pressure on him and we're not playing top 4 oppostion since he may struggle

pathetic only as far as we failed to to sign a half IMO. the Westerman & Sharp signings are good but they are over-shadowed by the failure to sign HB/hooker cover

We didn't have any cap space to sign anyone whilst Berro was still with us. When he went, just a month or so ago, most players were already signed up. Before Berro left, we replaced Calders with Sharp and Cusack with Westerman (no replacement for Hall), I don't see that a 'pathetic'.

Ultimately you've got to look at things in their context, there wasn't a great deal of English talent flying around this year and we didn't get an extra quota spot until late in the season. Plans involving Tansey obviously changed at the back end of Janurary making Phelps an obvious signing. We were never going to get anyone like Jonathan Thurston or Darren Lockyear to come and be our back up half were we? Anyone we bring in minus a hooker know they are pretty much 2nd choice, why would none off contract players who we'd want come for that?

Like Long was back up to the back-up at Wigan when Saints bought him?

I realise he isn't totally ready but there's not much point promoting him to first team if we don't give him any game time. i'd like to see him get a few off the bench at least

think you'll find he was playing for widnes at the time...starting 7 infact..

but young players get first team contracts sometimes becuase of there potential and getting them in a full time enviroment training on a day to day basis ect but dosent mean they should play players like williams and crooks arnt physically and defensivley ready yet but potentially yeh could become good super league players, at this moment in time im 99% sure that gareth moore is more ready and developed then williams to provide good backup now at first yeh i understand maybe not signing him because we had nicklas but now with his season long injury then surley hes worth a 1 year deal

We didn't [iknow[/i Berrigan was going to leave in December and even if we [isuspected[/i it we couldn't actually sign anyone until after he'd gone.

We didn't know we were going to have to sack Tansey a week before the start of the season.

The club can however be criticised for failing to sign a back-up half, which was the number one priority at the end of last season.

Too be honest I can see why you are feeling frustrated and I am to a certain extent....but I do think that the timing of Berrigan's departure and the timing of Tansey's latest episode has been unfortunate, the club have had no choice but to react to it.

That said I don't want any reactive recruitment next year, I want to have faith in our club to be identifying/approaching targets for 2012 now, alongside any outstanding recruitment for this year.

Especially as the exchange rate situation can improve dramatically over the next twelve months. Forward, strategic thinking is what we need, how we use our 2012 quota spots will go along way to determining our chances of silverware over the next five years IMO.
