| If any of these tales about players are true then maybe we should back the coach for once rather than letting the players force another one out.
Hodgson hasn't set the world alight though so no easy answers to this mess.
The only certain thing is if we do ditch Hodgson then next coaching appointment really is make or break.

If any of the tales about the players are true then any player found guilty of insubordination etc should have their contracts terminated for misconduct as they are clearly not here for the good of the club.
As for Hodgson unfortunately he has proved he hasn't got the authority in him nor the presence to stamp his mark to lead a group of professional players as a Head Coach so regardless of the players, backing him any further for me just delays the inevitable. We need a Coach that can instil discipline within the group as a whole but also at individual level. It seems training is run more like coffee mornings and certain bad apples run things as opposed to the having the law laid down as to what is expected and what is not tolerated, Hodgson is just far too soft and nice. I also believe that Purtill should follow Hodgson out the door as his assistant and righthand man he has also failed for the same reasons. Ellis I would give some benefit too as he is not an experienced coach and due to the poor leadership from above he will have found it difficult as I have no doubt if he didn't agree with Hodgson he would say so but respect the Head Coaches decisions and do as asked as he is a true pro.
Our recruitment in all fairness when you look at it has been and is still pretty poor and we are now back to the days when we had very little in the way of genuine quality across the pitch just a team of average players and too many utility players. When AP is spending up to the salary cap and you look at the squad even for next season you really have to ask where is that money being spent.
The likes of Taylor, Griffin and Houghton should have been moved on as not doing so will likely cost the club and Pearson an awful lot more than not doing so.

| I'm not too invested either way, personally.
If he goes then fair enough, thanks for your efforts Brett.
If he stays then I'm curious to see what he could do with a squad that was motivated and largely uninjured.
Feels a long time ago but we did look a reasonable side earlier in the season.
For all the talk of us not having a style, it must be difficult to develop one when the personnel is different every week in key positions, which I know is partly down to some iffy recruitment in the halves.
Recruitment does look better next year in fairness although 2nd row is a glaring weakness atm and I think we do need more pace down the wing.
I agree Taylor needs to go, waste of a prop atm. It sounds like Houghton will be on a reduced role next year at least. Griffin is an odd one, gone from form of his life to passenger. Hopefully a full off season might see some return to form if he is still here.
I just want to see better rugby however that comes about.

| I'd have Smith as the DOR, a link between the coach and Pearson, take some decisions away from Clarke. We also have a coach to step in if we don't start well next year. Worked pretty well at Wigan this year.

Think that was the plan Dave, but with BH going sounds like Smith will be the head coach.
Or so the story goes

| If the rumours are true I find it very confusing that presumably Brett has been the one instigating release and recruitment decisions when he may not be here and a new coach will have his own ideas. Up until recently the club were adamant that he would be here next year sureley if the club want rid that decision would/should have been made some time ago. I believe if another coach has been lined up he may have had some say in recruitment. Any new coach should have total say in all areas of coaching/backup staff to bring in his own people. Also its imperetive that we employ a DOR because a Head Coach cannot do everything and Pearson/Clarke dont have the relevant skills. One possibility could be Dennis Betts who is leaving Newcastle at season end, One way or another things need to change. The club is in the biggest mess from top to bottom in my 50 odd years as a supporter

I'd have Smith as Head coach for next year, one of his jobs would be to help identify our next head coach with him moving up to DOR the year after.

I suspect Pearson planned to keep Hodgson for next year, but with performance and the fans reaction, I don't think he has a choice but to make some kind of change to the coaching setup.

If what I've been told is true. He'll be on a rolling 12 month deal. After 2/3 seasons he'll move upstairs and appoint his successor.
Rolling 12 month contract suits both parties

I'd take that, his won record is very good overall, tool Rovets to their first play off and CC semi in years.
I don't think he is the best at bringing young players through, which is a key area for us over the next couple of years, so hopefully he will a people around him to encourage him to bring those players through.
Hopefully bin Purtill off and bring in his assistant or promote Shenton.

This is my take on it too, I also don't think Hodgson choosing next year's signings is a massive problem...most of the players we have signed are versatile utility players it's not like he's picked some unusual signings with skills a new coach won't needed. I'd imagine any potential coach would have signed Dwyer given the chance too. There's also months to go til the new season, Hodgson himself didn't arrive til Nov/Dec the other year.

Yes, versatile utility players but decidedly average with the possible exception of Hoy.

Doubt that very much. Dwyer cannot be compared with either of our two hookers. Yes he can scoot from the play the ball but so can Parcell and Litten. In all other aspects of the role he comes a miserable third.

| Dwyer can't be that bad, he was nailed on as Robys replacement until Roby spoke to Saints and basically said that they had just assumed he was retiring, but wanted another year, so they scrambled his extension through and left Dwyer in limbo

Parcell is a very good player, never understood Leeds letting him go. Ive never seen Litten change a game though and dont hold him in the same regard as the pther two.

| Its all not adding up for me the whole situation. Rumours of players doing what they want, I just cant imagine everyone at the club allowing that to happen.
I cant understand Pearson firing the gun now when he could have done months ago to save our season. It wasnt a money issue as we brought players in.
Say if Hodgson goes and Smith came in for a season before moving upstairs I dont see how that works either. If your going to make him DOR them do that and appoint a head coach, why wait about ?
My issue with Smith is hes known to take his bat and ball home, he gets bored and has walked out on a few of his roles. Im not so sure he will drastically change anything, it was proven at KR hes not exempt to losing the dressing room.
Say if it does happen and come this point next season it doesnt work out, who gets the bullet then ? Another head coach or the same players who would be on the fourth head coach. Considering all those barring Last have achieved a hell of alot in the game at coaching or player level.
I mean Hodgson is on the thinnest of ices, he hasnt many supporters. But everyone cant be that naive to think a new coach is going to turn these lot around ? They are rotten to the core with bad attitude, they all have to be on the chopping block surely.
