Why is it 'the only way forward for him'?

I've no doubt he would like a regular position in the side, but he's made a pretty successful career out of being a utility man so far. The term 'utility man' has some negative connotations, but having a good one adds a huge amount of value to any squad.

There's no such position as Utilty.

I was a supportere of Rich but the more I go through games been and gone I realise how average he is.

Whiting is that good he's classed as a utility (average) player because we can't pin point his starting position because he's that good he can play everywhere.

With only four with first-grade experience, you definately need a prop, I reckon.
We have 9 now (Clinton, O'Hara, Netherton, Wheeldon, Paea, Lovegrove, Taylor, Watts, Beaumont), which is probably a bit excessive in fairness. Though a couple can play 2nd row and we may well go with a prop at LF.
Would you want Wheeldon back? He'd still count as club trained for you. Not that I want shot, he's pretty decent, but he might have more chances to play at Hull, as things stand.

We need either a prop or a 2nd row. I'd rather us sign a 2nd row and shift Tickle up to prop when needed.

That's the biggest mistake people make about Whiting's role.

Whatever you think of Whiting's abilities in different positions, the fact that he can do a 6/7 out of 10 job in [iso many[/i positions is a massive asset in itself, and means that his value to the squad is far from 'average'.

I can't understand why a lot of people seem so hell-bent on the idea that Whiting simply must nail down a position- he performs an invaluable role for the side as it is, and there's no reason he can't continue to do so.

For me it's just that if he doesn't get a crack at a back row role where he can get his hands on the ball , use his brain a bit more and utilise what I think is his natural ability , we'll be left wondering whether his value could have been greater than it is as a utility.

Utility is a role, not a position. A role that Whiting plays very well. He is far from being an average player.

Hooker and prop are both roles
second row and wing are positions
