| Quote ="Jonny Boy IV"My opinion (and I appreciate it may only be my opinion) is that he has more to offer us than Horney at present. Rich is a top bloke and has ability but personally think Long & Obst would be more effective than Horne & Obst. At least we now have 3 options and dont have to resort to push Washbrook into 6. We even have the option of Turner or Westerman as cover. I do think that we shouldn't be resigning both Horne and Long as front line halves but as I said, I just think Long would add more to the team as long as we can keep him on the pitch.'"
don't devalue your opinion, that is what this place is about Jonny.
for me, I wouldn't go in to next season with Horne or Long in an ideal world, but then I wouldn't go with Whiting, Fitzgibbon, Dowes, Luaki, Radford or Lynne.

| Quote ="Jonny Boy IV"No doubt I'll get shot down in flames but personally think Long for another year isn't bad business. If there was an outstanding alternative then fair enough, but there isn't. People will no doubt talk about Cronk, Thurston etc but being realistic they arent going to come. With the new Aussie TV deal and the state of the UK economy then attracting a marquee halfback from overseas is not viable. A much better plan IMO is to try and develop our own halfback, and from what I've seen Williams is on track (or digging further into the youth at the club Wilkinson in the 18's certainly appears to have the talent). Long for an additional year whilst we work on Williams/Wilkinson is not a bad option.'"
How many other SL teams do you think would want Longy next season ?
None imo, his injury record is not good!

| If Longy drops his wages by half of what's been reported on here then he is probably worth keeping, just as cover if we can get another half back into the club.
If he a) won't drop his money or b) we can get someone better in on similar money to what he is now then let him go.
Either way I would be disappointed if he is our first choice half back next season, simply because of the amount of time he spends of the pitch.

| regarding giving Longy a contract for 2012, maybe on pay as you play, but a full 1 yr contract absolutely not
IMO it is more important to have consistency in the halves than anywhere else on the pitch and we can't afford to go another season with crocked half backs in Horne & Long
I wouldn't resign Horne or Long because I believe half backs ARE available if you look in the right places (i.e. Holdsworth, Finch, Witt, Sammut, Dureau, Herbert etc.) so we have no excuse

| I'd rather have Longy for 10 games with Obst covering than someone like Marc Herbert.
There isn't anybody else, unless we can persuade Bosc to leave France.
As for Horne, I tend to agree with Jonnyboy that Long and Obst is a better HB pairing. Horne won't cost much in terms of cap space next year with the 50% rule on his service. So as back up, he's ok for me.

| I'd rather look for a new 7, keep Horney and Obst covering halves/interchanging hooker. Longy is a sick note and doesn't play as many as he should, whether it's his fault or not it's fact.
Horney paired with a half who has a kicking game would go well IMO.

| With agar leaving it upto long , does that mean we don't have another scrum half coming in / lined up ? Could the 2 overseas players be a full back and forward !

| im still a big fan of Long and when on the pitch he still offers that leadership quality that weve lacks in recent years....but there lies the problem...hes not on the pitch enough for us to benefit from his experience......A new halfback pairing is a must for me for next season!!

He's had about 6 injuries/suspension in a season and a half. Re-signing him would be terrible business unless it's on a small contract (which it won't be) or a pay as you play deal

He wouldn't though. He could get a job coaching at saints or get a playing contract at widnes or in championship. We'll sign him then he'll miss half of next year as well

| I believe Obst's position should ultimately be rotating hooker with Houghton and not in the halves so having Longy on a pay for play contract isn;t a bad idea for me. He brings a lot of experience to the club. I would also keep Horne despite what some say on here his form hasn't been too bad this year and he's played well in the last few games. Obviously the contract will have to right for the club but realistically we're not going to get 2 new half backs and if we get one we will need cover, the lads in the reserves are nowhere near ready.

Is Horne's long kicking game (or lack of) actually blinkering people's opinions of how well he has played this season?
comparing him to an 'in form' Kevin Brown:
www.superleague.co.uk/statistics ... eason=2011
Horne is being relied on to do the kicking game due to Obst being rubbish at gaining round, and long being injured. Get a fit number 7 in with a good kicking game to take it off Horne and nobody would be complaining at how he has played

I'd get rid of long, offer horne a lot less money and then try and bring in a lesser known overseas half in his early to mid 20's

Isnt Calderwood on this contract at Quins?
Surely you count the full contract on the Cap, and then every game he misses you deduct that from the cap?

Wrong.
Radford can't claim any of it as his testimonial is linked to games played rather than length of service and Yeaman won't get any until his 11th season.

Maybe you've missed my point. I'm saying there are half backs out there but you need to look hard for them. This point has been made numerous times about our club in the last year or so. Brian Noble managed to sign Sammut & Witt. Witt could have been a good signing for us and possibly Sammut to an extent. Matterson signed Chase and if Agar had pulled that off then I would have been very impressed
Horne & Long may be big names in RL but it's not worth much unless they are fit and playing together at the same time. I would be cheesed off if we went into 2012 with both their contracts renewed and Agar saying "Sorry follks there was nobody else out there"

| But they've got to be a improvement.
Agar 'found' Picker but he couldn't get a visa, I do agree with you on some points but this season he got Obst in with little notice off Berrigan.
