And Whiting has his own attributes that make up for lack of speed. If Cooke is fast enough, Whiting is.

No. They're too old.
That's like saying:

Quote ="Mild mannered Janitor"I am fully aware that not all players can be stars, thats exactly our problem, too many work horses and "solid" players.'"
No. That [iwas[/i our problem. Now we've offloaded some of the less capable 'solid' players (Horne, Lee etc), there is definitely a place for someone of Whiting's quality to fill the utility role - even if you don't see him as a first choice player.

His position (within the squad) is that he can play just about anywhere very well. This is a big strength in a salary cap sport.

Just think that everything Horne brings to the Stand off position Washbrook is better at, even though neither are "true" 6's.
Also this wouldn't be a problem if Agar played Fitz in the 2nd row and Washbrook at 13.

Whenever Washbrook has played 6 he's done very well - as well as can be expected for a forward playing out of position. But he's not a 6 by any stretch of the imagination.

If we're talking about both players in top form, I disagree. Washy does a decent job as a stand-in 6 but is clearly a forward playing in a back's position.

I thought going back to 2008 Washy looked pretty pacey and took the line on well like a good 6 would. I think in 2009 his injuries made him look like he had bulked up and slowed down a little bit making him a better 13. Whichever position he plays, Washy would be in my starting 13 every week for his creativity, rugby brain and defensive work ethic, not to mention his leadership ability.

You seriously need to start watching a few games before making stupid comments.
Whatever your opinion of Paul Cooke as a person, even after being allowed to capitulate at rovers he is a far more skillful playmaker then Whiting. Jason Smith had no pace but was still the most skillful player I have seen in a Hull shirt. To champion Whiting because of his reading of the game is clutching at straws. I'd like to think any team with top 4 asperations had players who could read the game.
You are also confusing someone doing a solid job with playing very well as you put it. Whiting doesn't let the side down, but he is not a star player. By definition he does his part, no more, no less.
I can see however that we are starting to hit our heads against a wall on this one. I imagine you are the type of fan who thinks Paul King was "Black and White through and through" and "always gave 110%"

I'd imagine you are the sort of fan who is needlessly aggressive for no good reason. I haven't resorted to calling your opinions stupid, whatever I might think of them. That you have chosen to post in this manner obviously says a lot about you.
On topic, Whiting reads the game much better than most. That's why I'm 'championing' him for it. It's a particularly strong, and, I would argue, useful part of his game.
Whatever position he plays, he nearly always plays well. He might not be a first choice in any of the positions he plays, but the fact that he can play each of them as well as he can means he is an invaluable member of the squad. SL squads usually have between 22 and 26 players in them. This means that not everyone can be a world class player. But I can't think of a single player that's better than Whiting at what he does.

Not point scoring just not letting facts get in the way, I dont place my opinion based upon what i read on here I place mine based upon having watched the lad via my season ticket and my travel to all but three away games last season which is in my humble opinion the only way a true reflection can be made upon a lads ability is it not , or all of a sudden has the Daily Star RL column become the basis of all RL knowledge.......
but as someone else said a post or two ago
RW is a tallented individual with bags more to offer the club than GH, TL, or washy and is well in front of many of the younger lads in the pecking order, I had this VERY conversation with RW in Hull Royal before Xmas and his opinion was "I know clearly what I have to do this season and what rich expects of me" that says it all to me!!
I hope thats not letting facts get in the way is it

As has been said before on this thread, how nice to be debating who should and who should not play in a position when there are at least two who could pull on the jersey on and excel in the position: e.g. at 13 you have Fitz and Washy (and, some would argue, Whiting) - nice to have choices like this.

| In my opinion Washbrook is a loose man (a very good one) who can fill in a 6. At stand off I would pick Horne over him everytime. Horne has had one bad season due to his diabetes and his injury from 2008. He will be a different player alongside a playmaker taking the pressure off him and allowing him to do his own thing.

Is a better footie brain in my mind, washy looked ineffective and lost the majority of games he managed last term ( so did they all mind)
its My opinion RW is a much better all round footballer than Washy and 100% better tackler thats for sure

Agreed he is definately a 13 however with those in front of him where is he going to pick up game time other than through injury...
Agree 150% about Horne too, however I have to say he still looks totally washed out and does not seem to have gained any weight at all in my opinion, to be honest he looked poorly last i saw him in Dec! hope thats just his look now and not the illness
