| Quote ="carl_spackler"Firstly, I should establish that I think scrum half is by far the weakest of the 3 positional options Obst offers. I think he's a good bench hooker and half-decent stand-off. But in the summer, in similar positions:
Bradford got Briggs, who looks a better stand-off than Obst. They also got Diskin, who is definitely a better hooker than Obst.
Cas got Orr, who is at least as good, probably better, in all 3 positions, and we could have used the quota spot elsewhere.
I've only seen small amounts of Green, but he looks a better organiser than Obst, which is what we are in more need of than enthusiasm.
We may well have been interested in the above, but if so questions should be asked as to why we didn't get them.
Also, although I have given examples, I don't personally think the 'if you think we can do better, name them' stance means anything. It's not my job to know who's available and how good they are, so I don't have the time and resources required to find such things out. When Noble needed halves at the last minute for Crusaders did he panic buy the best of a commonly-known bad bunch in SL? No, he went and found players who many of us either didn't know, or at least didn't know were available. I know he didn't have the quota issues to deal with Hull do, but personally I'd take any single one of Witt, Sammut or Hanbury over Obst, they're all both better and younger.'"
Well said.

Briggs is that good he's currently residing in Bradfords reserve grade, and getting slated aswell. Orr is having a re-union like honeymoon at Cas atm. He's not been consistently better or worse than Obst over the last couple of years. Blake Green looks poor so far to me, he might improve as he settles in, he may not. What could you have possibly seen to label him an organiser of any kind?
Diskin is fair enough, we should have been in for him but he was probably after too long a deal and would of meant Houghtons development possibly being affected.
Also don't forget, we weren't even looking for half back cover for this year until our original cover had been sacked.

Key point - Obst wouldn't be at Hull if Tansey had behaved. On the back of that disruption things look to have turned out better than they might have.

Is that despite agar announcing at the forum last year that his main priority was a back up half back and the fact that phelps is playing where tansey did?

I have been surprised by Green, he looks a good 6 and will better playing outside Dobson.
I said at the time I would have liked to see Briggs brought in but we have to remember we had Nicklas ready to step up this season and Agar obviously thinks the likes of Nicklas/Williams are better bets than Briggs/Moore which is fair enough.

Presumably because our coach stated that he wanted to sign a back up half back when tansey was still part of the squad

Tansey was our FB [iand[/i halfback cover. Not many of them about eh? Probably right then that 2 players were brought in to replace him.
As regards to what was said at forums, I didn't think you believed anything said at these things? He also said that if something didn't come off he was more than happy to use what we had. I'm sure Obst on a 2 year deal was nowhere near what Agar had in mind before Tanseys feck up.

Of course we were looking - Sammut and Chase are the proof of that. But we were happy to go into the season with Tansey as back up instead of, for example, rushing to sign Briggs who is ripping it up in Bradford's 20s every week - not. Obst was a really good piece of opportunist business by Hull. Phelps directly replaced Tansey as you say and in times of emergency could even play half back - just ike Tansey in fact.

No, we were looking for half back cover before tansey's final misdemeanour. The fact tansey may have been used as a last resort option doesn't take away from the fact that the club wanted to sign a back up half back even before berrigan left.

Just tried ringing a few to ask if they would be prepared to do it but they're all at training. Give agar a shout later on and maybe he can help you

How many times did tansey play in the halfs during his time at the club?

A few times. You'd have to ask Agar but wait til they've finished training.

You asked me a nonsense question so I gave a nonsense answer. How do I know which players would have been prepared to come to Hull on teh same terms as obst?

Which Whiting would of been if we'd had a back up Winger.
