all the players should be banned from the NRL and sent on loan to HullFC as 'community service' its the only fair way of resolving this issue ![Wink icon_wink.gif](//www.rlfans.com/images/smilies//icon_wink.gif)

Because, of course, all players have an intimate knowledge of their club's finances!

| Quote ="carl_spackler"I think that's a bit of a harsh way to view the players, TBF. As far as they may be concerned, it's up to the club to stick to the cap and why should they believe they aren't? Also a couple of other points:
- the players over there are often on incremental contracts, so they would have little idea of the wage bill at any given time;
- they also see teammates leave, and are told it's for cap reasons (why should they then question their club's application of the cap? I also seem to remember, didn't Crocker offer to take a pay cut so that they could keep Newton?).
I actually feel sorry for the players. No matter what's gone on off the field, there's no questioning the work they've put in on it, and they've just had their main rewards for that work taken away from them.
If the operation undertaken was so elaborate that it's taken several years for it to come out, why would you expect your average rugby league player to have given it a second thought, never mind figured it out? All they'll be bothered about is playing the game and being paid, the fine details are for others to worry about. Be honest, if you were fortunate enough to be playing pro, earning a good wage, and winning, would you concern yourself with whether the admin was being done properly? I doubt I would.'"
I understand where you are coming from, but the more I read about this the harder I find it to believe that not 1 single player who has received additional payments over the past 5 years was not aware of what was happening. Admittedly, not every player that was involved may have realised, but I believe others will have.
Also, players talk. I am sure that having gauged roughly how much team mates where earning, some alarm bells will have been ringing for some players and it would have been blatantly obvious what was happening.
I’m not saying every player that has played for the storm over the last 5 years should be charged, but surely it is not unreasonable to expect any player who knowingly accepted additional payments should have to take responsibility for their part in this fiasco. In my opinion they are just as guilty as the storms big wigs in this underhand and blatant example of cheating and should be punished accordingly.

Exactly. Newspaper headline that "Player X signs for storm in $600,000 deal" when the player knows he's earning $1m.

How much knowledge of a club's finances do you think the average player has? I'd guess that it's roughly no knowledge at all.

Good. Hope the rest of the sport is investigated and dealt the same both in the UK and NRL.

It's definitely possible that 1 or 2 of the highest earners suspected, that's much more likely than the 2 payslips for all theory IMO. I still personally feel that it's a possibility rather than a probability though.
With regard to players talking, that only strengthens the likelihood of them not knowing. It wouldn't have taken 5 years and a tip-off for it to come otherwise, the press would have had a sniff of it a long time before now. I think that by and large, most players probably don't know what each other earn though.
I totally agree that if it does come out that players knew about this they should be dealt with every bit as harshly as the club. I'm just struggling to see reasons why they would, and can't understand the certainty with which some seem to believe they did (not actually you, this bit).

He knows how much he's earning, what is published he's earning and how he's being paid it. He will also know how much some of his colleagues are being paid, what comparable players are being paid elsewhere, roughly what the going rate is for someone in his position with his level of experience, what he was offered elsewhere and where, roughly, in the club's wage structure he will be.
Now you may get some really dumb players who can't piece all of that together but I'm guessing most of them would

Possibly, but knowing your place in the structure doesn't mean you have any idea what the other players are earning.

You're guessing most players would be able to piece together how much they are earning, how it is being paid, roughly what some team-mates might be getting and a rough guess of their place in the wage structure and deduce from that that the club is definitely deliberately and consistently cheating the salary cap? Time to set up the rugby league detective agency I think; Holmes, Marple, et al. will be out of jobs in no time.
