Karoo were the nominees. Indeed, correct me if I'm wrong but I think they actually won an award for best ISP recently.

ANY router will work with Karoo, there is no way the broadband signal knows what type of box it is connectiong to, only the branded (Sky/Virgin etc.) one's sometimes don't work.
As has been said, go Netgear, pay what you feel comfrotable paying and follow the instructions, and make sure you secure the connection!'"
I've had a thompson router for over a year now and its been absolutely fine with no problems whatsoever, everyone to their own i suppose.

Again it goes down to what you want from a router but the Thompson routers are pretty poor when compared to the competition. The reason Karoo give them with a contract is because they are the cheapest on the market that work for them.

| I believe KC recommend Netgear, or at least they used to.
We have a Belkin which works fine, even with 3 of us online at the same time.

| My Netgear has been excellent but I still have issues over the sub 1MBPS service supplied by Karoo. When BT take full control they might start to invest in KC's old infrastructure.

Reduced prices when KC has competition?
This must support the argument of KC taking advantage of it's local position as a monopoly?

| Pretty similar to the new bundles they are offering at k-c.com to be honest. The Hull ones have larger bandwidth allowances but the phone packages are the same.

I swear by it, was a bit weak set at 54mbps but after setting for 108Mbps it's signal is great, plus very easy setup, just about does it itself. I have my PC in loft conversion, but get just as strong a signal in living room to laptop, passing through 2 floors. In fact at these prices i may just get another one in case this one throws the towel in. I've had it for about 4 yrs.'"
How did you change the settings?

If it's a Netgear Router you'll have had an installation disc with it, so there will be a program in your start menu or an icon on your desktop which says 'Router Login'..
If not, then make sure your computer/laptop is wired to the router with an ethernet cable then;
Log in to your NETGEAR router by browsing to www.routerlogin.net or www.routerlogin.com. Enter the username:admin and password. By default the password is password or 1234 unless it has already been changed.

To be fair you seem to have a bit of knowledge about our Computer/routers/ I had no problem until lets say 5 weeks ago when my Netgear went off. I eventually this week bought a new Netgear from PC world. I am clueless as to the running of a computer and I thought abought throwing it through the window, I got it up and running with ther HELP of KC because I let the phone ring and ring. I know nothing and the majority of people dont. I thank Karoo for keeping me sane.

| Thanks for the links provided, I did manage to log into my Router. Unfortunately once I was in there was a plethera of settings just waiting for me to mess-up so I logged out and ran for the hills.
I've got the mother-in-law round for dinner today, I'll let her have a go at it. She reckons she's knows everything!

Netgears are pretty striaghtforward and the settings you need to be changing are these
Use the tab on the left side
1, Basic settings
Internet requires Login
Encapsulation - PPPoA
Login - Your Karoo login
Password - Your karoo password
Domain name server - Get automatically from ISP
2, ADSL settings
Multiplexing method - VCBASED
VPI - 1
VCI - 50
DSL mode - If you are on the newer packages Karoo lite/mid/pro etc then ADSL2+
3, Wireless settings
NAME(SSID) - This is the name that shows up in wireless connections so you can name it what ever you like it is just so you can differentiate it from other routers showing.
Region - Europe
Channel - Down to choice although I tend to start with 11 and if no problems leave it. (DO NOT use AUTO as this can result in the router constantly switching channels when other routers are within range)
Enable Wireless Access point - If you are going to use router wirelessly then this needs enabling
Allow Broadcast of name(SSID) - Again best for standard users to allow this
Security options - I tend to use WPA2-PSK as it is very secure.
WPA2-PSK Security Encrytption - This is the password that laptops and other wireless devices need to put in to connect to the internet. Make something hard to guess and a mixture of letters & numbers is a good idea. (Example say if you like to have oldfaithful as the password change it to 01dF41thfu1 (The cap in the sequence is also added security)
Once you have applied all the settings go to Diagnostics and reboot the router from there.

Just remember to make a note of the password so if anyone comes to visit and they need to use it you can easily connect them.

I have signed up to a new package because it works out cheaper for me but it depends on the individual.
I was paying £29.99 for Karoo pro and signing up to home xtra means i pay £10 more and get an extra 50gig peak time download as well as all my calls and line rental for an extra £10 a month so a good saving for me.
No difference in speeds because you are using the same lines as before with the same awful ratios.

| I'm still stuck on the old unlimitted 500 package so I should (hopefully) see an improvement. Shame theres nothing in between the 30GB and the 150GB bundles tho'. Still it works out a similar price to what I pay now for phone and net so reckon its a goer.

| If you are a heavy downloader as long as you schedule your downloads between 12-8 you will get down roughly the same as you would on the older unlimited packages.
