Really shocked by this, puts everything into perspective. Hope the team do him justice on Friday with a big performance, and I hope the fans respond.

I can`t lie, I was hoping he would go,but now understanding the circumstances I wish him well,and a speedy recovery from his present state of mind.

It's an illness that show no signs It just come up on people .If you break your arm you see it mending But depression at the time there is nothing to see if anybody is improving.Some people are good at hiding the illness I hope the lad get over it quickly he will need a lot of love from his loved ones Get well soon Brett hope you get all the support you need to help you get well

Is this just a random car crash, suicide attempt or an accident down to his mental state?

Really sad to hear this, and a moving facebook comment from his wife.

James Smailes appears to believe it was a suicide attempt. He got into a bit of an argument on twitter with someone who was having a go at him for tweeting Brett a get well soon etc message.

My heart goes out to Brett, his wife and family. I know only too well how depression can affect the life of a person and those around them. Having to witness my daughter who is only 19 struggle to deal with depression for the past 3 years is heartbreaking but with the right care it can be managed. It is such a misunderstood illness which can affect anyone. Get well soon.

I was shocked to hear this news last night. This is a very cruel and devastating thing to suffer from. I hope he and his family pull through this and see brighter days. It is at times like this when the club, his family and friends need to remind him that things are never as bad as they seem.

Whether back in Australia or here in the UK I hope he finds the support network he needs. Best of luck to him and his family.

It just proves us supporters of all clubs can be complete idiots at times.

For me it shows a guy with pride who is obviously trying to do well for us but for whatever reasons it isnt working and its hit him very hard. I already had respect for him and wasnt in the brigade of people slagging him off pre-accident but that respect has gone up a great deal and hope he can get well very soon.

As with all RTA the Police will have or will be interviewing Brett. Until then I don't think anyone should make assumptions as to reasons for the crash. FC have taken the correct stance by releasing a short and non committal statement.

Not sure this should lead to an increase in respect for the player, a great deal more thought should go into the things people say to players after poor performances, though.
At the end of the day, sportsmen are people and it can't be nice to feel as if the world is against you.

A royal "we" as fans. It just seems to me, reading this thread that people have made a assumption that Brett's wife's statement relates to the reason of the crash? I just wondered if I had missed something here.

People are probably drawing some conclusions from a tweet by James Smailses last night! Whether it is true or not I have no idea and I certainly won't be repeating it but it was there for all to see. As its likely that the family might just be looking on here and its obviously a very sensitive subject perhaps we should stop being so inquisitive and wait and see what is made public !

I agree with you Wilf.With an illness like he has the lad needs supporters to stand by him not make wild accusations. People should understand his mind is in a dark place and he need people around him to show him respect and love and help him to get better I can say it will take a lot of care and it could be a long time before the lad get better.I have had to deal with depression first hand.Just hope the lad get there and get better
