What is often left out of this fact is that many thousands of these shirts wear sold at massively discounted prices as incentives with junior season tickets. Basically they were sold a large loss.

Indeed and people was slagging our merchandise team off after Jenkinson? Buggerd off to leeds......we have a far superior set up and locations to 1 certain Lancashire club who like pies.They have a small retail unit at the back of their main shopping centre. |

To play devil's advocate, these shops pretty much have a monopoly on their loyal but niche customer base. Like a lot of retailers they'll now be making a fair proportion of their sales online, I suspect.
The move towards online shopping will have depressed rents, I guess, but maybe also city centre footfall. And there'll certainly still be cheaper options; when you consider that stuff like mugs and key-rings must have pretty low margins, that could be crucial.
Shirt launch and Christmas will be the big money spinners, and you could maybe cater for those with a pop-up?
City centre is maybe more about profile than (direct) profits? |

Haven't they still got a shop in the St John's centre? It's quite well placed, really. No less so than Saville Street, I'd say.

I wonder how much merchandise is worth to clubs - it usually seems to be expressed in terms of revenue rather than profit. Any ideas on what the profit per shirt is, roughly?
I shall do some internet research...

So roughly £25 quid on a club RL shirt gross profit nowadays, maybe. |

If you look at the first 3 pages of the above though, it's clear that rents drop off significantly once you leave the city centre and go on to Holderness or Anlaby roads. Easily enough to cover the loss of, say, 500 shirt sales and, for example, cover an additional 6 week pop-up in Princes Quay in the run up to Christmas.
Some Rovers fans have, over the last few years, complained that the failings of our retail arm cost the club lots of money. I've always felt the scale is likely overstated. Because...
1. It's probably a bit of frustration displacement, IMO - making a big noise because you're dissatisfied might seem a bit whiney (which it shouldn't if you've had problems) but if you're just thinking of the club then it is more acceptable suggest it is a big deal.
2. I don't much care for shopping, and in fairness maybe tend to underestimate or forget how much others do like it and therefore it's value to the club. The mark-up on shirts reported in the article I read was a little higher than I expected.
I've always thought the way to go for merchandise for Rovers (or most SL clubs) is focused with a fairly narrow range of goods and with low overheads. Less potential for it to go wrong that way too! The big plus of a city centre shop is maybe the intangible of what it adds to the club's image and profile. Leeds and Wigan don't share their city/town with a direct rival, of course. And they're forever winning stuff, which no doubt diminishes their need in that area. |
