| Players of all ages get injuries and IMO it's a red herring in all this. Any player stepping on to a SL field has the potential to get injured whatever age they are.
Where Agar fails is in his ability to send out a team which, even if under strength, has the ability to perform with the right levels of enthusiasm, structure and basic skill set. His teams don't seem to want to win. By that I mean they don't defend and chase kicks like their lives depend on it. They don't play to any pattern which, even if here isn't a real half back in sight, should be possible. There is effort but it's often misguided and directionless. We have seen this time and time again in sub standard performances over 2+ seasons. How many times do we hear him say that some players 'are not aiming up'. Isn't it his responsibility to ensure they are up for each and every game ?
ATEOTD most Hull fans realise that injuries have crippled us in recent times. If we could see a team on the field that played with some structure, busted a gut as a unit to try and overcome adversity, and performed the basic skills at the required level I think we would actually join in a siege mentality to get us through the tough times. As it is there are a number of players who put it in week in and week out, but others who appear not to give a about the club or their team mates and that is reflected in the poor level of their performance. Agar is the coach and by definition he is the one who allows this situation to proliferate. It's gone on way way too long now.

| I said after the Celtic game - where is the 'coaching'? I mean something tangible, where at least the fans can think well we tried something different there. Some structural changes, depth of line of attack etc. We're still the flattest line to my eyes. I alluded to what little influence our 2nd in command must have or is not allowed to have.
Tansey should go, brainless.
Washy goes too - good div1 player but thats not good enough.
Hall - we'd all love to see him achieve what many thought it was possible for him to achieve. Too many chances, gotta go now.
Dowes/Cussack - too slow.
Lauiki - jurys out for me, on evidence shown also needs to go.
We need more pace throughout the side and we need more ball players. That includes not playing our best ball player on the flaming wing!!

| For mine the criticism of certain players,at the moment is a tad unfair.
If you are coached by a dummy, you play like one.
Until we alter our backroom staff, and the coaching structure, nothing will change.
It only took Wigan 3 months, to radically improve.
we could sign Slater, Thurston,Inglis, and within 3 weeks, we would play the same,as we are now.
Nothing will change, until Agar departs.

but letting berro go and getting c smith could happen and is realistic if the board have ambition so stop trying to be a clever boy, look at warrington every year there recruitment just gets better and better and the reason is ambition from the club weres ours signing average players on big wages stupid

| In fact you ing idiot I'll take your moronic ramblins futher.
Berrigans contracted with hull so if we wanted to get rid we'd have to pay his salary off, let's guess £130,000 (some will say more)
cameron smith currently earns $500,000 a year (before third part payments) that's £300,000. And that's before we have to compensate the loss of Queensland and australia jerseys.
So that's at least £430,000 for his first season. And that's if Melbourne release him.
So clever? No, just a realist.

more to the point Hooker isn't a priority IMO Berrigan/Houghton are 2 of the sides better performers when fit.
its no7 and centre were the biggest issues lie.

By 'now' do you mean immediately or at the end of the season? Because we can't afford to release 5 players immediately, and we can't afford to release Berrigan at all.

| Posted on this subject earlier in the week (think it was on the "Last chance saloon" thread).
If we were looking at assembling a squad of players capable of mounting a genuine sustained challenge for the top spot, then the only players I would take without reservation are Fitzgibbon, Manu, O'Meley & Whiting. Each of these has shown throughout this season that they are capable of making a significant contribution to any side in Super League.
Long, Berrigan & Horne have, in the past, played at the very highest level. Whether they still can, given their injury/fitness problems, is debatable.
The various youngsters within our squad have the potential to be top class players, but I have a horrible feeling that under the current regime, that potential will be squandered. There are already signs that the likes of Briscoe, Houghton and especially the much maligned Hall are not developing as quickly as we all hoped and in some cases (Hall) are going backwards rapidly.
This leaves the vast bulk of the current squad, and as I repeated in the earlier thread, I just don't believe they are up to it anymore, certainly not at the very top end of the game. The cumulative effect of three years of losing on a regular basis further exacerbated by a clueless/directionless coaching regime has reduced a collection of decent (if not exactly outstanding) players into an ill-disciplined rabble seemingly incapable of carrying out even the most basic aspects of the game.
Even with a complete revamp of the entire coaching staff, starting with a Head coach who has bright, fresh ideas in tune with the modern game, I have my doubts that the playing squad as it stands can now compete at the very highest level. Too many players have become psychologically scarred by the last two years and their confidence levels have erroded to such an extent that deep down they no longer believe in themselves.
The appointment of a top class coach would certainly improve matters, but there are some serious issues which need to be addressed regarding the current playing roster before we can contemplate witnessing laps of honour around Wembley or Old Trafford.

By now I mean as soon as possible, whether that be by releasing now, not renewing contracts, granting early releases, accepting transfer fees, anything.

Presumably berrigan would have commanded a similar size of contract before he left Oz? In his prime, SOO and National regular. Do you really think he signed for us for £130k?

Totally agree, two half backs and a centre is needed, however what is available made your bed comes to mind. this should have been priority last year, too late now me thinks.

while a international berrigan wasnt the top paid player at brisbane, I doubt he was in the top 3 tbh. At the time lockyer was on a reported 400k which was about 160k in pounds.
Berrigan came to the uk because of the offer of a 4 year deal and a easier time on his body.
When he came the pound was very strong now it's weak
Smith is in his prime hence the 500k a season, which is now 302k pounds.

True that Berro is contracted for this season, if the club had wanted they needn't have honoured the optional fourth year. His contract would have ended and there would have been no pay off required.

Its been widely stated (correctly or not, I've no idea) that the optional 4th year was solely an option for Berrigan to take or not take dependant on how many games he played in the preceding years)

I don't believe they have. Berrigan was interviewed on Radio Humberside about six weeks ago and said he would be staying for 2011 as he'd played 50+ games in 2008-2009.
