| I thought it was a penalty, if Washbrook was really going to try to challenge for the ball he would of jumped, not just run straight into the player.

That was my view of the incident too.
anything else and all a player has to do is run at the receiver with his arms open and claim he was challenging

Watch the replay, Washbrook is in the air (not as high as Ashe, but still in the air). Also watch Washbrooks eyes throughout the chase he is looking at the ball, so therefore was competing for the thing he was watching.

| Quote ="cod'ead""Play to the whistle" is coached into 5 year-olds. That is: play to a whistle actually being blown. If we had players watching the ref put the whistle to his mouth, then they weren't doing their job. The only reason a player should look to the ref is to check he's onside at a PtB. anything else is amateurish.'"
I knew you would be along. It was a combination of being a clear knock-on and the referee indicating he was going to blow his whistle. Poor refereeing.

Look again. Washbrook IS in the air. In fact he gets closer to catching the ball than the Saints player ho jumps above him.

Thought I'd seen it right, Cod'ead always as been a known apologist for officials even when they are blatantly wrong. That is the problem with our game, if officials are crap other officials (or ex officials) defend them blindly. Lets face it, all of this would have had less discussions if the idiots at the RFL didn't invite controversy by giving a Saints fan a St Helens game to referee.

| I thought in the first half you were going to put the game beyond us,your offloads in the tackle were killing us but then we got a sniff and scored a try and thats all Saints need to get some confidence. As for the ref well first of all i agree that refs shouldnt be allowed to ref thier hometown team. There were some 50/50 calls the Washbrook one being one of them it certainly divided the comentary team. The Foster knock on however was the right call Foster is bringing the ball into his body, theres no seperation between him and the ball and its then knocked on by a Hull player.
Good entertaining game hower and for you to get 5 points from the Easter period is a good return for you.Good luck for the rest of the season.

Whether Ganson was crap or not should not have mattered in the slightest: he still made far fewer mistakes than the players we had on the pitch.
But let's take the easy way out and blame the ref for poor decision making by professional athletes and their coach.

| He went to claim the ball for me and shouldn't have been a penalty but fair play to saints they played well in the 2nd half. We're our own worst enemies sometimes and take some dumb options under pressure.

| Great game to watch. Pen could have gone either way to be honest, something that was said to me whilst watching was the fact washbrook wasnt looking at the ball just jumping for it?

The fact that we shouldn't have been in a position where a crap call from the ref cost us the game doesn't change the fact that a crap call from the ref cost us the game. Both can be true at the same time.

| A further ridiculous penalty Ganson gave was in the first half when Whiting fielded a kick and was then penalised for apparently crossing behind Will Sharp.

That's how I saw it aswell. I've just got home and looked at the incident on Sky + and at no time to he take his eyes off the ball. I think Mr Ganson likes a bit of controversy.

That was a blatant obstruction. Not really Sharp's fault, more Whitings for deciding to run a line directly behind him.

You are clearly a WUM. It was a kick down field which Sharp was chasing back. Whiting got there first and simply continued his run. Sharp does not have to get out of the way and Whiting is perfectly entitled to run that line.

never an obstruction, the player has no obligation to move out of the way.

| i thought the Foster knock on he got right, Horne knocked it out of his hand forwards, but the Washbrook challenge was very harsh, the thing is you see those up in the air tackles/challenges every week and they all seem to get pulled up nowadays. but for me it wasnt a penalty.

Agreed. What did Ganson expect Whiting to do? Go into reverse and run the open side of Sharp? Now that would have been crossing.
