| Quote ="UllFC"I'm thinking we should perhaps bring in an Australian director of rugby to go with this appointment...and help with recruitment.
i.e Agar picks and selects the side, and is in charge..but with an experienced coach alongside him, with the ability to attack overseas players.
thoughts?'"
firstly good luck to Rich and i'm sure with his already vast RL knowledge and the time he has already spent here he will definitley take the club forward.
Sharp was the coach and even if Rich did have his own ideas during this time it was down to P.S whether he actually implimented any of them or not so we can't really comment on this.
tbh we don't need an Aussie director of rugby as in the case of Steve Mac who had no experience also, he has had no problem with recruitment whatsoever,
i would take an educated guess at this and say that the first thing that any player would say when approached by another club is ''how many are you gonna pay me?'' not ''who is the coach?''

Money talks, I don't think King, Johns and Monas went to Wire due to Paul Cullen.

| Seems a bit of a strange appointment given the timing of it etc. Nevertheless we've not had a British coach for a while so it'll be interesting to see how he goes and in what direction he takes the team. Good luck Richard

| However RA turns out as our coach, whether he's a big success or not
(AND I OBVIOUSLY HOPE HE IS !) this appointment has been made for one reason and one reason only.... ££££££££££££££££
It is just another shining example of our board's lack of ambition and willingness to spend our money and to do what's necessary to be the best.
Totally underwhelmed but just hope that, for once, our board have actually chosen the cheap option which turns out to be the best one !!!

| Just out of interest, if Agar leads us to defeat in the Cup on Sunday and we struggle to get off the foot of the table this season, will he be given the boot like PS too?
I can't see what Agar will bring to the role tbh. He has been with the club as a no. 2 whilst 2 coaches have been sacked. Surely during that time he has had some input into coaching and team tactics? People say he was great during the time we got rid of Kear and appointed PS, but some on here have said that all he was doing was what PS told him to from Aus!
I've said it before anf will say again, this sounds very much like the Steve McLaren and Sven Eriksson debacle.
IMHO we should have a full clearout and start afresh. There are too many issues behind the scenes at our club and I can't see Agar being able to rid us of these!

| I'm very hapy to see Agar get the job, however I just hope we havent rushed into this appointment or gone for the 'cheap' option. I'ts good to see the board have got faith in Agar and hopefully he'll have the players (and fans) full backing aswell. I think the sensible option would have been to let Rich see the season out and see were we are then, but like I say at least the board are showing abit of faith and this is a great chance for him to show what he can do as a head coach. All the best Rich I hope you prove to be a success.

Maybe just maybe the board have actually looked at who is actually the best solution to our current problem regardless of money and after taking their time have actually gone for RA as the No.1 as they feel he has the right tools to do the job successfully.
Just because we pay more for an overseas or any other coach doesn't mean they would be anymore of a success at the club than RA could be.

He should be give a chance, he is restrcted by sharps signings, too many average players signed on my him, on contracts for this season and next.
Think it will take a couple of seasons to turn Hull back into a force.

Debatable, and not really when considering the point people are making. The concern is mainly overseas recruitment, how much can an inexperienced coach appeal to NRL players? You say McNamara has done well, but he's still only captured 2 players from over there. Tupou is a bit hit and miss, and IIRC Morrison wasn't long after Noble's departure so he was probably already well into discussions.
If anything, McNamara backs up the fear, as he's recruiting mainly from SL.
Also, if the first thing they say is 'how much are you going to pay me?', knowing us their next words will be 'no thanks, x have offered more'.

| FFS give the guy a break and a chance and some need to get over their all things australian obsession.
And as for saying that it purely down to ££££ well that just ridiculous and such a knee jerk reaction and doing Rich such a diservice.
He's been appointed for a reason and maybe that is he actually might be good enough.
Let's support him not pull him down.

| Well we all bemoan the fact that we do not appoint enough young British coaches and here we are running him down before he has had a chance.
For me , there is more to this than that, some soundings must have been taken with the senior players and their views obtained. I think it has been planned for a while myself. Lets face it, for me, it is better than Harrison or Cullen or even Murray. With Richard what you see is what you get and he has studied under a great motivator who could not man manage and a great man manager who could not, apparently motivate. That experience should stand him in good stead! It's a positive for the British game on the franchise front too!
Lets get behind Richard and give him our support!!
As for an assistant the last time he was in charge and did so well Lasty was the power behind the throne as far as motivation is concerned I would go for him I think although it is a risky one!! The kid is FC through and through though!
The fact is he is now our coach and we should give him at least till the end of this year and a pre season to sort out some of the mess. I think as a club it shows great belief in the British game, although some will no doubt see it as a Cheap and cheerful fix and of course it is both!!!
Lets get behind him on Sunday!!

The voice of reason, well said Wilf. People questioning RA appointment obviously have no idea what so ever of his coaching abilities and great FL knowledge.

I don't doubt his coaching abilities, or his RL knowledge, I DO question the motivation behind this decision, the way the announcement was handled and wether our board are really pulling out all the stops for the future.

| Quote ="PAUL M"I have mixed feelings.
On the negative side I do worry about the length of time he has been at the club and his closeness with the players. We needed a totally fresh approach and some backsides needed kicking and I not sure RA can go that after being no.2 for so long. Also I think a new proven Aussie would have been able to tell the board what he would and would not accept whereas with RA I feel that the club will have complete control over him.
On the positive side he is young, talented and British and its good to see people like that getting a chance. He will now have the chance to implement his own style of rugby league too and his philosophy will hopefully be a more attack minded one. He seems like a really great guy and certainly understand the fans and the club too.
Only time will tell if its a good decision but I feel the negatives outweigh the positives just now although I will be delighted if he can prove to be a success.'"
Sums up my feelings as well.

I agree with what you've said except for that in bold. That imo is an insult to RA why can't the appointment be based on his coaching credentials.
Just because he has an english accent and has been promoted from within he's being written off.
