I think if you do a 25% weekly water change religiously most fish should do well. I stopped adding water treatment about 2 years ago as it always seemed to make things worse and effect the healthy fish.

We did that for the first couple of months, then had 3 weeks away where we didn't get chance, and the fish were affected after that. I reckon the weekly quater tank water change is good enough. We also have one of those syphon things to clean the crap out of the bottom. They look happy enough now, after their sodium something-or-other bath. Just hope they live till Tuesday, when the kids come back.

looks a nice set up but your heater in the pic is upright and the warmth of the heater will of turned on and off too much ideally it should be at 45 deg central to the length of the tank.

what filtration have you, also is it connected to protein skimmer or uv light for marine ?

depending on the tank size it can be prone to what they call new tank syndrome, its all down to the nitrite levels rising sharply

no not really when you have a tank full of fish that can run to thousands you have to have some knowledge of keeping fish.

I kept marines for quite a few years and had a lovely copperband that fed from my hand, I did a water change one day due to not having a protein skimmer in the system that would take the yellow colour out of the water and I lost the full tank full of fish


the water hadn't come from the usual source as was too hard, I should of checked before doing it

Yeah, I read that after the mother-in-law purchased 2 goldfish for Persian New Year (it's a tradition over there). I came back home to find them swimming in a vase full of Evian. The Iranians would've chucked them to the cats after a couple of weeks, but I like fish, and the kids were keen, so we opted for the tank.

Yeah in the summer, the tank is always a tad too high so I don't really want the heater being too efficient as it will see the temp sore well past 90f! It's not a marine tank and I'm only ever so slightly over-filtering,

for the 450 litre pond I will be looking to have something really powerful.

Guy I used to know from my days in the darts and dommies team at the Castle kept coy carp in a swimming pool in his garden. Used to love coming back from the pub after a few ales and watching the fish on a summer's night.

I killed off my first ever aquarium due to lack of patience - got everything set up, filled it with water and introduced fish 24 hours later - I was horrified to watch them all die off over the following few days.

If I'm remembering it right - nitrite levels spike dramatically as fish produce waste and the cultures in your filter media are not sufficiently established to break it down (into nitrates - is that right Snowie?) The result is that your fish get poisoned by their own shiz, which can't be pleasant.

yes it is the ammonia from the fish poo that builds the nitrite level up.

its amazing how the tank can can reach a high poisonous level from clean water to then drop down and stabilize itself, with more fish crapping away would expect it to creep again but the culture within the filtration do balance it out

well last night at 3 in the morning a grey tabby skinny cat came meowing at the back door 12 days on the tiles and he has now finally come back

vets tomorrow for a check out but bar for a mark on his lip and being very skinny he looks fine
