Remember coach saying was dirtiest game they had ever been involved in. They scored a try from a high kick which bounced inches from going out dead in goal but it bounced straight up in the air.

What a game and what a night. I think we had two sent off to their one but age dulls the memory. We really rattled them that night and we have never played them again. I remember Des Hasler making a break and being overhauled by Richard Slater much to his surprise.

Remember the game very well.
First time in the stand as a kid and the fight broke out from a scrum straight in front of us.
Remember Nigel Bell running around the scrum to collar whoever it was had upset him.
At one point Mal Meninga was patrolling the sidelines trying to make sure his team didn't get beaten (UP!!).
Will never forget the cold, wet evening - great game. A great Wakefield team.

great game,we played well that night,i was at the back of the posts when they put the high kick up,i could,nt believe it when it bounced inches away from the deadline and bounced back for them to score,but I remember the 60,s when they came and it was fight after fight,the likes of vines and turner,they won the game 29-14,but they lost in the rough stuff

We scored 4 tries against them I think, no one other than Halifax scored as many tries as Wakefield di that night.
Bobby Fulton had a stand up argument with harry Gration after the match and said something like "What the F--k do you know about Rugby" to him on camera. Australia had two sent off during the game and one after If memory serves me right.

There were a number of brawls which Trinity came out well on top from, the side we played was indeed the midweek team but by the end of the tour it was mostly the Test team.

If my memory serves me correctly billy got sent off for punching brad McKay but could be wrong. Awsome atmosphere and the Aussies knew they had been in a game. Would be interesting to know the crowd, as the old girl was rocking that night.

I remember the match and I think it is the only time I've seen us play a test team.

During that tour both ourselves and Halifax managed to score 18 points past them, no other team did, not even the GB team.

I don't remember Billy Conway (my favourite player of all time) been sent off. I do remember one heck of a scrap between Jonny Thompson and Benny Elias break out in front of me. Both got their marching orders but it was one blood thirsty match to watch. The score may say we were well beaten but we gave them one heck of a match. Classic. (P.S. I'd love a DVD of the game.)

I too would also love a DVD of it, as would my Dad, as a Christmas present, as I'm sure would lots of other people who'd be willing to pay five times what it cost to make, nudge nudge, wink wink to the club!!??

I think that's another game and I remember it was John Helm who John T was talking to.

As I remember Fulton was asked by Gration if he felt the Aussies had let people down after they were criticised for rough stuff. Fulton basically questioned whether Gration knew anything about RL and when Gration said that was insulting Fulton said you can stop the interview if you want so Gration did.

It was Carroll who was the main Aussie getting involved in scrapping that night. A similar build to Sironen so I can see how memories could get hazy after 24 years.

Those tours were great. I used to get to as many games as possible.

It's often the same in tour games. The tourists feel the locals are just coming out to fight, the locals think the tourists are being too rough and are defending themselves
Happens all the time, but I think we really fronted up to them and they responded in kind so it ended up a very tough game.

I think it co-incided with the switch on of the new floodlight so you could actually see the game properly. I might be wrong about that.... my memory is useless.... but I do remember it was a fantastic atmosphere and I have never been so proud of my club in defeat

The game was shown live on BSB (British Satellite Broadcasting) who merged later with SKY so I guess its SKY who own the rights.

The commentators were Eddie & Stevo though who transferred to SKY after the merger.

Think you will find the immortal "we like it hard" comment was made on a Scrum a Down game.

The opening of the Wakefield floodlights was Yorkshire v Australia when Neil Fox played a blinder. 19,000 plus there that night. Was supposed to be meeting somebody there. Never found him (pre-mobiles).

I've got a DVD copy of this match. I last watched it about a year ago. I might have to dig it out to watch again for old times sake.

The penalty count that night was 27 to 7 against Australia. In his book Gary Belcher said that throughout the tour Aus got hammered in the penalty count. Johnny Thompson and Mark Carroll got sent off after half an hour. Ricky Stuart got sent off a minute from time and David (cement) Gillespie went after the final hooter. Dale Shearer Des Hasler and Billy Conway were all sin binned in the second half too. Ellias and Lyons played that night two of my all time favorite Australian players. That wasn't just a cobbled together midweek side they were all superstars. Ive got the back page of the Wakey Express stuck in my Programme. The crowd is down as 8000 (est).

I'll have to dig my old VHS's out but I'm pretty sure he was sat on the Belle Vue bench when John Helm interviewed him and I think it was either Salford or Hull at home.
