| Quote ="Trojan Horse"I was thinking about the Hickey debate today.
For me the pre-season should start here for him.
Hickey has been thrown into games and as a player naturally will want to play if his coach picks him. We have seen glimpses of how he can be devastating close to the line.
He now has an excellent chance to start early and get his fitness up and work on his physicality.
Hickey could be like a new signing for next year if he is handled correctly. Come pre season games he could very well be a machine and back I'n fighting fit form and battering teams down the middle leading the pack.
He has had some stick of late which maybe justified a little but some of that should be directed towards the man who has picked him for games.
He is a pro player and will approach the preseason with the correct attitude I would expect.
This is what I hope will be happening and we could see a good return from his signing.
As for other players, well just one or two QUALITY overseas players will do of a good quality and preferably not to the back end of their career.
I'm sure there will be many options at present but I hope we aim high.
With the positive licence decision, the more professional structure and the imminent upgrade of belle vue we should see a few more players willing to sign with good old trin.'"
This is the bit that worries me, I know he couldn't have arrived "match-fit" as he had no club prior to coming over but as a "professional" I would have expected his general level of fitness to be much higher than it was when he arrived. I understand he has never been the leanest of players but what we saw at Salford in his first game was a shocking sight for a "professional" RL player.

He certainly can kick goals - got to score some tries though for that to be of value.

We've got a perfectly mediocre goal kicking winger ourself at the moment haven't we? Griffin has done an average job most of the year for me, why not make the effort to keep him rather than
There seems to be something about foreign players that posters get all gooey eyed and loose all proportion of how good they actually are.... He's an import so he must be better than a homegrown lad.
Griffin, Morton, Johnson, George - enough to go at for now.

No he isn't, activated a one year option for 2012 a while ago.

of those who could make a difference, and suit the English game I would go for...
Matt Bowen - full back NQC
Adam MacDougall - centre NK

Agree with the general point, dont watch the NRL so no idea of the players you have suggested so can't comment on them - but you are right. 4 absolute max but proper quality.
I would say we need to go all out for the best hooker we can find and afford, look at the difference Monahan makse at Wire - get that position right and you are well on your way. Next priority would be a pair of big props, 1 proper grafter who plays long minutes and 1 with an offload game. I can't see us getting hold of a hooker from over here so that would most likely need to be an import but props we could probably find without going there.....

I totally agree. For me the key positions for overseas players are props because all clubs need at least 5 and not many manage that from home grown. The others are 6,7 and 9 again because you generally need at least 2 of each and they are all specialists. The only other positions I'd consider are F/B and L/F and they would need to be exceptional.
What is a total admission of defeat is signing S/R, Centres and wingers. If as a nation let alone as a club we can't produce enough players in those more utility positions then I suggest we call it a day for RL in this country.

| If Hickey has anything about him he will be busting his gut(s) from now until February to get himself ready for next year. If by the start of the season he is still a fat mess of a man he needs to be locked in a dark room against his will, probably with his hands and legs shackled, until he loses some weight. It may be that he is given vitamin D injections along with an allocation of gruel he can have in small but often portions.
Hopefully that should be one of the props for next year sorted

| I'd go all out for Bowen, he's pure class but I think most clubs will be after him. I think Wesser at Souths is also available.
As for hooker, i'd go for Lincoln Withers at Cru.

He was very lively for them on Sunday and looked very good, but having said that I would probably have looked good at hooker for Crusaders on Sunday!

The man is a liability!! He has regularly been dropped this season for being as useless as half the morons that pretend to play for Wakefield each weekend. If we do make a move for a player from overseas, that player has to be quality.

Spot on - quality. There has been some crazy suggestions for recruits for next year on here, ranging from pretty much everybody in the Crusaders (bottom of the league) team to Patrick Ah Van to even Shad bloody Royston the other day......

| If Bowen and Wesser are looking to play in SL, I really can't see either of them ending up at WTW next season - Bowen in particular is a quality player.
I guess the panic mentality is setting in somewhat in terms of new signings; the longer this coachless vacuum continues, the fewer decent players will be available. The fear is that we end up exactly where we were last season, picking up the scraps and cast-offs that other clubs didn't want.

possibly the worst overseas signing in history. He's so poor I'm not even convinced he ever played RL before he arrived at Hull. I'm sure someone called Lauaki did but not this geezer. Terrible player absolutely terrible, I'd actually prefer we kept Hickey at least he gives away less penalties.'"
Signed for Wigan apparently, got bags of potential but he will be one hell of a project without any doubt. One thing is for sure though he is not the penalty machine he has the reputation for being.
The main challenge in relation to overseas players is the increase in the cap in Australia which will see average players able to command higher wages in the NRL, which will obviously have a knock on effect on their wage demands in the UK.
Coaches I feel need to really concentrate on developing players in house, and only recruit quality players to compliment them from overseas.
The Crusaders decision to fold does provide the opportunity to recruit a few good players that would help Trinity in the short term.
