Surely passion in these matters is a negative. Would much prefer a calm, level headed, dispassionate approach personally

| I too would like to see a team of Wakefield lads ruling the roost again, but it aint going to happen. We can all get misty eyed over the team 1960's but it's soon going to be 2014, populations are transient, loyalty is not the valued commodity it once was (sadly).
A sportsman's career is generally a short one and they have to maximise their earnings within that short time (and pay an agent), so invariably they will "chase the brass". Sure there are exceptions but that's the way its is.
Whilst sad to lose such as Kay, I'm glad to see that this regime really means it when they say they will only spend what they can afford. There's been to0 much 'smoke and mirrors' at Wakefield in the near forty years I've been watching.
Very, very few of us run our lives by spending more than we've got, so why do we expect our Rugby League team to. It's alright quoting Wigan as the paragon of virtue when it comes to home grown players. Take a look at this Wigan side when they were in their pomp in the 1988 Challenge Cup Final:
Lydon. K.Iro, T.Iro, Bell, Gill,
Edwards, Gregory, Case, Kiss, Shelford, Goodway, Potter, Hanley.
By my reckoning Four Kiwis, Two from Widnes, One from Leigh, One from Bradford, and one from Huddersfield and one from Cas. Three from Wigan
That sustained success that these and others like them bought them the structures they have in place today to produce more home grown players that we see today.
If the players we sign now and in the next few years bring us the success to enable us to upgrade our structures then that's fine by me.

| Quote ="try scorer"Don't afto.to judge a player by how many super league clubs are queuing up for them ,you judge on what you see and what you can do with em, I was around when the last great trinity side played apart from maybe half a dozen they were Wakefield lads ,laugh and say I'm old fashioned but Wigan have done it through history, pride in their town and club means a lot and wasn't it only 2 or 3 yes ago we beat a Wigan side containing a few of their present first team squad in a national final, and I'll wager the player daddy cool is talking about is not a Wakefield lad'"
Of course long term we would all like a Wakefield based team but that isn't where we are so no point moaning about it.
But equally you can't just rewrite history to prove a point without someone picking you up.
Sean Wane is one of only 2 Wigan born coaches since 1984
The other was Mike Gregory who wasn't there long through no fault of his own but could hardly be assigned a legacy of Wigan players.
Before them Murphy and then Colin Clarke covered 4 years in early 80s.
10 years before that another one.
None of the coaches through the 60s were Wigan boys.
Playing wise, their great team of the 90s had Robinson and Offiah, Goodway, Gregory, Skerrett, Platt, Betts along with the overseas players. None were from Wigan.
The great Wakefield team of the 60s? Half a dozen as you say were not Wakefield. That's half the team. None of these were from Wakefield.
Gerry Round
Fred Smith
Alan Skene
Gert Coetzer
Jack Wilkinson
Don Vines
Even Turner went elsewhere before coming back to us.
We should indeed try to build a local team, but don't try to tell us that's the only way, or that the most successful teams did it.
In all cases it's a mix.
As for Daddycool not being a Wakefield boy.
Were the chairmen from Wakefield preferable to you?

Are you sure about that my old coffin dodging chum!!!
Kath Hetherington is from Fev and im sure Agar is from Fev/Ponte and the last time i looked these areas are among the five towns of Wakefield.
The problem is we dont have areas like Eastmoor producing the coal mining rugby players with the passion to play for Wakefield anymore, for two reasons,no pits and the estates are little more now then a giant housing area for immigrants.
You need to stop living in the past and constantly trying to sugar coat everything that happened then.

Wigan haven't signed players from the Wakefield/Normanton area lately, have they?

No professional sportsperson is passionate who they play for only passionate about how much money they are making.

Im sure we would all like to see more local lads involved,as someone born and bred on Eastmoor i would love to see another Belly/JT.
They maybe still out there - just in fewer supply.
Ah the 60s - what a great team we had,but unfortunately we never built on the success for a multitude of reasons.
We have what we have now in the present not due to the last 5/10 years, but due to the last 40 years of management. Its been a steady decline over the last 40 years interrupted by the odd bright spot.
The Wakefield area will always be a breeding ground for future stars as long as we have quality amatuer local rugby.
The challenge for Trinity is to make them juniors believe that Trinity is the club for them, rather than just expecting the junior to want to play for them.

Well put, Turfedout
There are still some excellent amateur clubs in the district and we should be able to unearth some
new talent but it's all about money these days and the reality is, that Wakefield at the moment doesn't
have enough pulling power.

Aron Murphy spent a season at Batley and Batley fans were severely underwhelmed by his performances and couldn't wait for him to go back to Wakefield. He has since proved to be a SL standard outside back and fullback, some players suit a higher level and find themselves more at home there than in the lower divisions.

| A 21 year old half?! If he does sign up I suspect he'll be on more than the 15k offered to Kay. I know hes debuted in the NRL and has probably gone through a more thorough development process but we've just let one kid go who has had similar first grade experience because he was thought to be asking too much only to sign a younger player who may be asking for more.
Still if he arrives so be it I hope he grabs the opportunity with both hands and has a successful transition to SL.
