| mellars is not a centre hence his inability at centre. he played a full season with the cruseders on the wing and was very influential in that team, if i remember he was their top try scorer. we should play him in his natural position drop Fox and play sykes at centre.

Why drop Fox What has Mellors done to deserve depriving Fox of his place other than trading on last years reputation and being an Aussie. Fox is not without his faults but Mellor jeez one try!

I agree that one try doesn't make him first choice, equally, Fox lets in more than he scores. Defensively he is not good, either under the high ball, or when tackling.
IMO he was a better player in his first stint with us than he is second time around.

Must watch a different Fox to me, can't fault him under the high ball - Mellors on the other hand has left him stranded time after time
Defensively one really poor game against Warrington and he's crap - how fickle fans are. A few month ago that was Cockayne and it's been Mellors all season.

Really, he's scored 8 tries so far - that is epic for a Trinity winger and about the same as Mellors at this point last season at a guess.

Are you serious????
Both of our wingers have been exposed on many occasions this season and need to improve 10 fold if we are not going to be peppered all season!!
Not saying that Mellars would be better mind as I think a lack of assistance from the centres is partly the reason for the failures under the high balls!

| We don't seem to shepherd and protect the man under the high ball like some teams do - watch Leeds and Wigan, who will have the surrounding players artfully running lines that keep the chasers off the catcher, whilst appearing to be watching the ball.

| Quote ="vastman"Yes, apart from the Bradford game if that's ok with you - you're becoming prone to exageration in your old age. I never said they couldn't or shouldn't improve - simply stated Mellars has done nothing to suggest he would do better and on many occasions along with Collis is the cause. In Foxes case I don't reckon he's bombed any more high balls than any other winger in the comp

Cheeky bum!
Agree to disagree on the high ball issue.

He is the clubs leading try scorer! Also most meters, highest average gain and second in clean breaks.

Also poor at Hull FC and Saints (although he wasn't on his own that day). As I said IMO he has been poor in defence, perhaps his centre should shoulder some of the blame but I think Fox can be better.

They can all be better. Problem is Wingers and F/B's are exposed - everyone see's their mistakes. In my experience Wingers are victims of general poor team play. Forwards who allow to much yardage to be gained thus basically lose the game, the opposition kickers being given way to much time and space, inadequate shielding from Centres etc etc.
Everyone loves a flying winger and so they should - but I don't hold with the modern ethic that they are one of the key players - an extra forward and all that guff. In a good side a winger should do little more than support the man, find space, catch and run very fast and beat the man - which in itself is a lot. If the rest of the team are doing there job the winger should be the glory boys. I absolutely hate seeing the wingers run the ball in sometimes three times in a set, to me that is abject failure.
I'm not absolving them of all responsibility but the yardage figures even taking account of the soft yards suggests Fox does more than enough, way more than Mellors ever will - there are a heck of a lot of players ahead of him to bag IMO.

| As usual, fair comment and I cant disagree with your comments, but for me I would like to see a little more commitment from the guy in defence.
If we compare him to Cockayne, you never see Ben give anything less than 100%. Yes, he can make mistakes but you know that he's trying his rocks off for the team but, with Fox on odd occasions he seems to shy away from certain challenges.
BTW, i'm not really tring to bag the player, this started in relation to Mellors and his "prefered" position of winger.

I know your not. Foxy is a great winger but definitely old school and as such will always be happiest burning up the grass - and for me that's how RL should be played. Cockayne is all effort but he is not a natural finisher imho. Offiah couldn't really do anything but score - a lot - a real lot
