| Thats the point though...........anyone that smokes (any amount) and drinks will affect their own ability to peform to their maximum potential.............
They (hopefully) have 50 yrs to smoke and drink to their hearts content AFTER they finish playing.

No its not illegal and its not a banned substance.
Jocky Wilson smoked 60 a day - didnt stop him being world champ.
Seriously though, any sportsperson that chooses to,i dont have an issue with - its their body.If they to choose to do so and reduce their potential by 10%,again its their choice.
If the person is performing to a level that his employer is happy with, then whether he smokes or not is irrelevant.

| There are several rugby league and other sports players that smoke and drink, thats no concern of ours!!! Aslong as they get on field and do the job i'm not fussed if they smoke 20 and drink 5 pints..... although if it got out of hand im sure JK would realise this

If this is the case then we need to get him shipped out asap. Can't imagine the likes of Wilkes, Fergy, Pitts and maybe even JD would be happy at hearing Scullys wages. People have slated NGB4C (granted Scullys played well this season) but it may be he is right on this .'" one
everyone of these players named would be right to get the sulks on with the club as each one deserves to be on more money than scully!
if its true , that amount is obscene for 10 minute stints here n there!

If they are reducing their potential by 10% then they are cheating themselves which I agree is up to them but they are also cheating the club and the fans.

| I think a few would be shocked by just how many players smoke, some of the biggest names in the sport on both sides of the world are more than partial to a cig or 2.

But there not cheating anyone.
If everyone is happy with their performance on the pitch - why would anyone feel cheated.
Do you think anyone ever felt cheated by Socrates - the great Brazilian footballer.
63 caps for Brazil and a heavy smoker and drinker.
Im sure people watching Garforth Town didnt feel cheated to see him play.

Indeed, I gather even King Wally was partial to the odd Woodbine and a half of Mild occasionally.

However I think his behaviour (if true) in going to the Sun, threatening legal action etc. is unacceptable. If the rules are no drinking and he breached club discipline then he should be man enough to accept his punishment and get back to playing as soon as his suspension is complete.
If he does I would be happy to have him back in the team, if not the he can go for me.'"
If the rules are "no drinking" why was there a fridge full of beer available on the team bus?? Also what kind of coach would sit there and openly let a player flout "club discipline" without saying a word?
It smacks of poor management all round to me

I would prefer them not to smoke as it's a dirty habit but we can't do anything about it. Some of them only smoke a couple a week so thats not too bad. But still it could catch you out sadly

But that performance could be better therefore yes they are cheating those who pay their wages be it the fans or the club.
Socrates was in a different era but still who knows how much better he would have been had he not smoked and drunk so much.
They also used to eat steaks before games but don't anymore because things have moved on.
Players used to get tanked up the day/night before a game they don't anymore because things have moved.

If you truly believe that they are cheating the clubs and fans then fine, its your opinion -- i just dont think you will find many people agreeing, unless you ask the question at Kingdom Hall.
Nobody is denying that the players that smoke maybe wasting some potential, but they are paid a wage based on what level of performance is expected from the individual,if they reach that level then no one can complain. The only person they are cheating is themselves.
Fabian Barthez,David Ginola,Igor Stimac,Zidane,Bobby Charlton,Jack Charlton,Wally Lewis -- World famous international sports stars from different eras that all smoked -- im sure you wont find many fans who felt cheated by those players either.

| neggy and turfed out, i agree with both sides of the argument. yes the body is better without smoking and drink but also these players were signed while they smoked and drank. if somebody stopped smoking suddenly their game could be affected...ie anxiety etc (snowie after your comments you would agree)..also the same with having a beer..it can relax you after a tough time...no beer = stressed eric = tension = drop in performance maybe..arguments both ways.

I still suffer anxiety ever now and then but because the habit of holding the cig has gone I can tend to get over it quickly, as for my performance I can tend to breath more easily when running around with the kids shame the joints rattle tho
I also sit with my work mates and have a bit of passive smoke now and again and that tends to smell nice when they are smoking, bit later

| Given that neither player was accused of smoking, I think it's fair to say we've done this topic to death.
Any new developments in the Scully saga can have a separate thread.
Any top tips on how to give up smoking can be put on the Sin Bin, with a PM to me and BIGAL.
Cheers, folks.
