| I very much doubt it.
Me and my son were at the Wales v Malta game last weekend, and my son interviewed Sammut before the game, for his rugby league 360 page, and within the conversation he brought the subject up of his time at Wakefield, and let's just say that the move was a disappointing one for both parties involved.

| Quote ="Shifty Cat"O/T But I'm gonna do some reminiscing about said chippy, RL and dribble on a bit here, it's all gonna do little to push the Sammutt topic, but hey swings and roundabouts but for the most part they're my board ramblings so get ready & don't hold it against me., peace.
That chippy above posts are mentioning, way back in the 80's,90's and 2000's, till it was sold to it's present owners; belonged to Andy & then Kev's of Stanley bought it in the early 90s,but Andy still managed & ran the place. it's gonna link up with Trinity in the next paragraph so hold on.
It had some great things going for it, firstly as a lad/man who'd eaten Fish & Chips all over Wakefield & beyond , imo it was easily the best chippy around (Yes i know, that could ruffle some feathers on here with that statement) & thus was always packed. Just as important, it was the absolute Centre of the universe for rumors about Trinity, at least near the City Centre & to the east of the City, an all range of different blokes; people who were close to the club; players & all the fans that called straight after a game who used to pack it out and talk abort all things RL, especially how we'd been robbed yet again.
Anyway, Andy who like I say originally owned it/managed and also before that one, he owned the one next to Eastmoor high in the early 80's, anyone remember that one? The bloke was RL mad and a bit of a fountain of information regarding Trinity. Said information was usually always sourced from all his punters and the odd player who used to call in, mainly Thursday, Friday and Saturday. It literally was the RFLfans of it's day or other Social media but better because it was face to face and you could make good mates and conversely have some proper face to face arguments , hmmmmm the good old days.
Long story short Andy was a great guy, who loved his RL & could talk about the game for ever while your special was cooking for example. He also sponsored my team up at Eastmoor back in the day - we all felt like Pros at the time in the new shirts with a sponsor logo on the front, i think we actually played better that season because of those shirts. He was involved in the Community side of things long after I left.
The funny thing that always sticks in my mind about this time in my life, was that Andy and my dad were mates for years & because Andy was so fanatical about Trinity, my dad called in every Saturday dinner time after he finished work and they'd talk RL; eventually this chat turned into a weekly bet with Andy during the winter RL season that went on for years - it went along the lines of, Andy always backed Trinity every game, no matter who it was against, my dad bet on whoever Trinity played against; If Trinity won, the old man had to pay double, around 15 quid for the food and 15 again for Andy's back pocket; Problem for Andy back in those years, as we all know Trinity's winning percentage was rank & my dads order was 6 fish & 4 chips, plus scraps of course, so this wasn't no small time bet. There was a time from the mid 80's till '94 when we both piled on a lot of what I called muscle mass, just due to mass consumption of 2 fish and a big bag of chips each week, sometimes twice when the Challenge Cup was on, maybe a Yorkshire Cup bet here and there as well,;we were literally like the Wigan of the chip shop RL betting game, we won it all for years
. Being serious, well kind of, my dad was a Trinity fan as well, but as he told a young Shifty, he looked at it all as a good way to get over all the losses
.
They were good old days and good people with plenty of characters around, and most importantly, awesome fish, Chips, scraps.
'"
Brilliant story and yes we too loved the fish and chips from there and knew he loved his rugby

Spenners in Normy was the best chippy for me.

Yes, Davis's Fish shop was on Warmfield view, and Georges Fish & Chips on Stanley Rd., the ambulance station wasn't built back then though,it was The West Riding pub situated there.
I remember around 1971 when Eastmoor ARLFC were based in the pub for a season whilst the new Clubhouse was built, George sending over fish & chips free of charge to the team.
My memory is a bit fuzzy, but i think we had won the Wakefield & District knockout Cup, anyway, whatever, we had won a trophy.
I can definitely say the fish & chips were among the best i've ever tasted in my 70 years lifetime.

Wow, that's going back some years, when will that have been? the early 60's. i remember being told the High school got built in 1968, so it'll have been before then. That's a blast from the past about Andy's old Chippy. When I was a really young kid I can remember it not being there when we used to ride down to Fourboys shop, which is now where the Post Office shop is, he used to cut hair in the back LOL - then all of a sudden it popped up next to Norma's. It got purpose built as Georges the Chippy, I'd forgotten about that, then my memories kick in more when Andy took over in the 80's.
I'm gonna get told off for taking this topic into member berries territory soon. But I've just had a right blast from the past when thinking about nearby chippies that are no more. Do you lot remember the Chippie that was across from the JET petrol station years ago; it was right on the end of the terrace houses with the dirt track next to it to Eastmoor Working Mans Club., can't remember it's bloody name though. In the 80's it gradually started getting bought out and soon a Pizza place opened, Chinese moved in exactly where the Chippy was and lastly a sandwich shop.

To be honest he is worth whatever a team is willing to pay him. The choice not to play him was ours for whatever reason.

We obviously bought him because he'd played great at Bradford, has good utility value and we thought we were going to get the same player. Not one that refused to play against his ex bloody team, I bet that made friends in the dressing room that had an effect on his time here if I had to guess. His first season here, except from the odd flash. he was average at best and he got a decent crack in 18 games, we did try him, but he just didn't quite settle and as his contract rolled on into the second year, who knows what he was like in training etc when he wasn't getting game time and going on loan to Workington and London. Just one look at his career stats, with the exception of Bradford, when he's played in SL he's been nowhere the player he has been in the Championship which is understandable but for some reason the more structured SL game doesn't lend itself to his skills imo. In the Championship he looks like a superstar, just waiting to step up but as happened here has repeated itself at Wigan for whatever reasons.

Batty's mate cracking fish and chips, unfortunate to have been in the proximity of George's, as was the one two or three hundred yards away at the end of Stanley St, unusual to have 3 vg fish shops so close together, everytime I saw Sammut he always had a pie in his gob, it's a good job those three weren't open otherwise he'd be 20 stone.

Which game did he refuse to play in? Because from what I can see, we played Bradford twice whilst he was with us, and he played and scored points in both?

could have sworn blind he refused to play Bradford when he joined us. I've seen it mentioned on here a few times over the years as well. Don't know if he didn't want to but got told to stop being silly or what, but unless I'm going dafter than I already am I'd have put good money on it happening.

That's the one, used to get bags of chips with scraps for about 10p back in the day and share them with about 4 of your mates. Like you say it was just too close to George's, shame because it was another nice Fish shop.

I’ve seen it mentioned a few times, but it’s never come from anywhere official. But if you you look at the team sheets he played in both games. I remember him coming on as a sub against them on his debut, and he started the other.

If you say he played he must have mate, as I mentioned before it must have been something to do with him not wanting to play against Bradford because he'd just left them and joined us.; I defo remember it caused the fans to react. Someone will come along and remember it.

| My opinion is that Sammut is the worst signing made by the club during the MC years. Wilfully didn’t play at times and when he did half hearted at best. Actually detested the sight of him by the end.
Bloke was an idiot, one for not being professional enough to move on from Bradford even though it wasn’t from choice. Two, not realising that at Wakefield he could possibly have made himself a bit of a legend instead of an almost player he is. Daft.
I wouldn’t want him back.
