| Eden was the one name that came to mind. Not sure if that is an improvement or not????
Cheers Ritchie. Not always been my personal fav but I respect anyone who pulls on the shirt and crosses the white line. Been one of our better full backs in Super League.

| Good luck to the future Richard thought we may have offered a 1 year deal to help him bring through young max jowitt, maybe Webster thinks jowit is ready now and may get a run in the team till the end of the season.

| Richie has played pretty well throughout his three years here and has been pretty consistent this season apart from being played out of position. You only realise how talented he is when someone tries to fill in. Thought like most he'd have been offered a one year deal with the intention of bringing Jowitt through gradually.
He'll be hard to replace and someone like Eden isn't the answer in my opinion but I'm sure Webster knows what he wants

| Odd dips in form aside, I've been happy with Mathers - he's been one of the most dependable fb's I can recall seeing at BV and probably the best at joining the attacking line; hardly missed a game through injury, is a positive force around the club and certainly injects some passion into proceedings.
Best of luck to him - and I trust that JW has a plan to replace him.

| No loss for me, had 4 good games under Webster and he's now a Billy Slater or Sam Tomkins.
Hit and miss for 3 seasons just like the rest of his career.

He's a loss to the club no doubt about that.
I don't think anybody rates him as a Billy Slater etc but anyone who knows anything about former Wakefield fullbacks, knows that he is the best attacking fullback we have had for years.
I know he has his defensive moments but attack more often than defence wins games.
Good luck to him, personally I would have tried to resign him - if finances allowed it and, of course IF he wanted to stay!

| The guy has been in good form since Webster took over.
He will take some replacing as FB is one of the most important positions in the team.
Good luck !

| This is another that might divide opinion - if this had been announced 10 games ago there may have been a chorus of approval but now the team has had a decent run and Mathers has been a part of that it is more difficult. Also he has dropped a few clangers in recent games that have been masked slightly by the fact we ended up winning.
In previous Mathers bashing threads I have stated all along that Mathers has some severe weaknesses to his game for an established fullback but having said that he also has several positives about him that made him the best fullback we had (or were likely to recruit). Maybe the club think they have other options that provide better value with Hall, Sammut, Owen, Jowitt etc.
Anyway, I like Richard's enthusiasm and involvement and I am sure he will be an asset to whichever club he ends up at next season.

| When Brough put that towering bomb up on Sunday the ball was in the air for enough time for me to wish that it was Mathers who would be taking the catch. It was Sammut who fluffed it and spilled the ball straight into the oppositions hands for a walk in under the sticks.
Safest pair of hands we've had at the back in Super League.

| Terrible decision to let him go. We are a much more structured side with Richie at the back. The wheels always seem to come off when he isn't playing.
Maybe Hall will get the #1 next year but I aren't sure how good his organizing skills are.
Good luck Richie

| Although he hasn’t helped himself with his ambling when chasing a kick through, I hope the full back play from the first half on Sunday highlighted what we’ve got/had with Mathers. Yes he seems to back out of tackles and time his arrival just as the opposition scores a try, but he’s the best full back at the club and arguably the best full back Trinity have had in SL. He will be difficult to replace.

| My guess If Owen has signed hes fullback cover and wing. The replacement could be Curtis Naughton ex bulls lad who went to oz but coming back appatently. Mathers going to bulls is probably not correct as they have signed mullaney as their fullback. Would like Kear though.

| Sorry to hear Mathers is leaving. He undoubtedly loved it here and his passion shone through.
I think he is a much better full back than Sammut and feel our defence is better organised with him at FB.
Yes he's had a fair few brain farts and his tackling is questionable. However he proved effective going forward, linked well and had good pace. There is no doubt he knows how to score a try.
This season we had Sammut covering FB, last year Lee Smith. I think on each occasion we missed Mathers.
I'm not sure on the plan for the future. I certainly don't think Eden would be an improvement. I would be fearful everytime he is involved in the game.
We have options in the current squad with Jowitt (not made his debut yet has he?), Sammut and Owen (who I don't think has played FB for us yet) and next year Hall (a possible option).
All the best Richie and thanks for the memories.
