Mason was superb and the whole team responded to Australia's bully tactics.

I think we scored 4 tries which was better than every other club on the tour, possibly Halifax may have matched us.

We need some of that "we aint going to roll over for anyone" attitude in our first few games this season just to make others sit up and take notice.

Always thought that "midweek team" stuff was a red herring. The Aussies were no different then to now, the whole squad was International class and the difference between those picked for test matches and those not was almost a whim. There wasn't a single Aussie player in that side who under the tight circumstances would'd have got a test spot. Contrast that with the GB squad that has struggled since the 1960's to find 13 players of that quality.

It was a top notch effort by us against a top notch team.

Fittler was only about 17 years old during this tour i think. I think i have seen tape where he scored a try at the Donny rd end beating defenders with that double sidestep of his. Was this his debut game for the green and golds?

Remember it well,Johnny T told me some time after that what kicked it all off was that the aussies were making some nasty comments about some of the wakefield players wives who they had met at a earlier function!.Bet the atmosphere was brilliant in the bar after ?.Awesome night though and the closest i have ever come to being part of a lynch mob,crowd were going berserk and that particular Wakefield team lifted themselves to a whole different level,reputations were formed and respect was earned.

vastman - spot on mate every last one of them that came over were test class players and could have walked into any of the other countrys test squad at the time.

I'd actually say that some of the midweek team in 1990 were better than the first team now. The likes of Stuart, Elias and Lazarus were all time greats and along with Lyons and Shearer were in the starting 13 test team to play GB (I think Walters was on the bench?). Fittler went on to be even bigger and was Captaining the Aussies 4 years later.
The pack they put out was as hard as you could imagine. That's why Johnny was at hooker to beef up our pack.
