There are 6 or 7 in there that I would pick over what we have now!
Regrettably one of them will never grace the turf again!

Go on then - how many?
I would have Drew and Brough - with Atkins who was here in 2006 but missed this game. Possibly Stosic - and that's it!

| perspective is key here. if people wish to remember ned, monty etc on their odd best days versus the current crop when they are pished off after a loss, then those rose tinted glasses will always make it look good.

I always thought even his tackling was overrated, quite often people quoted his stats when he was third man, more doing the job of completing and marshalling as they get up to play the ball. I'm not saying his contribution was totally without merit; I just find it strange how people usually expect so much more from relatively big name overseas players, when for me he was pretty one-dimensional and nothing outstanding at that. I'd take Dunc over him anyday.

I'll say it again, it depends on what form.
- Griffin at his best undoubtedly, but as he was that year, no.
- Korki had his worst season in 2006 until the last few games.
- I was a huge Marchy fan, but Drew offers more going forward.
- Solo without a doubt.
- Watene and Dunc I'd consider consistently effective players - they'd make the 2009 team without question, but I don't think they are particularly better than Sausage or Ferguson (who I'm admittedly cutting a little slack as he's young for his position).
- Field - sound squad player, but no more. I'd take Snitch over him.
- Despite my above criticism of Betham, we still need a loose now.
- Moore is as good a prop as any in either squad.
- As would Elima, but he was never consistent enough.
Overall I think the current front row is stronger, even allowing for the loss of Sculthorpe, who, whatever the arguments, offered something different. in 2006 we only had 3 out and out props. What we had then was Solomona and an actual loose forward, who although not the kind of loose I'd rather have, suited us as Solo provided the added extra. Even if the 2006 pack was on top of its form, I'm not sure it was much better. As it was, it almost played its part in getting us relegated.

| Darrell Griffin (If he wanted to play) (Bibey)
David Solomona (Snitch)
Monty Betham (Henderson)
Paul White (Peterson)
Olivier Elima (Korkidas)
*James Evans Centre (Martin)
I would say the above players at the time, would be preferable to the players we now have at the moment in the same positon.
*Borderline, due to the short spell with us and the improvement in Martin this year.

| First of all I have to say I agree with Big Cat. One bad month and the world has fallen apart for many fans.
Given our past I don't think anybody should be unhappy with mid table anonimity. When a team has a bad run it is easy to pick out players and coaches for that matter but it can just as easily be put right and we don't lose another game this year. (problem is of course everybody else is trying to do the same thing!)
Picking out a few comments:
"Kear has taken us as far as he can"
- If he has, we are in a decent position, why can't we accept that?
- Personally I think he has more to give, and can improve the team more
- Money will change how far the team can go now
"Toppo was a better coach than Kear"
- Toppo was one of my all time heros as a player, but can you say any individual player improved under his management? He brought some very good players to the club with his connections and did a good job with them, but personally, the measure of a good coach is whether players at whatever level they are improve. There are many that have improved under Kear, can't say that about many of our recent coaches.
"Squad of xxxx year was better than ours now"
- of course if you pick the best players from another team and compare them to the weaker ones from this team they will look better (eg Monty v Hendo). That is a very naive thread. There are a few players like Fox or Elima that with hindsight might have been better staying but if the likes of Solomona was still here (great as he was) the rest of the squad would be weaker. Anyone who has done a fantasy team knows you can't just pick all your best players.
- on early season form the balance looked great. We need to get back to that.
Overall I would change some players at the end of the season but I certainly wouldn't be changing many. (High earners and old men will be top of the list of course but not all of them)
Finally, I still say, the emotional challenges the team has had to face this year have not just been handled in a few weeks. The team need support in the tough times not a witch hunt.
Imagine the emotions Sam goes through every time he takes the field after his year. If he wasn't concentrating for 100% of the time you could hardly blame him...and I think he is doing a pretty good job. Same for the most of the rest.
