| There’s plenty of wealth in England to supply every city with the facilities we want, its how it’s distributed what’s the problem. I work in the prison service, take it from me, the money wasted would make your hair curl and that’s just in one establishment. The monies sent abroad, well, another embarrassment I have always been staunch labour, but I take no sides on this one as they are all corrupt, lying sods whatever we want to call them and it’s frightening to think that no matter what we say or do these so called powerful people just keep doing what they want.

Indeed
Controlled by the ruling classes, generally educated at the same school, looking after each other.
We get what we are given and are supposed to be grateful.
Councillors used to be different and some had a conscience but, nowadays, even that is changing.
When council leaders can be paid more than the Prime Minister, there is something fundamentally wrong.

Agreed, throwing more money on broken systems would imho waste more money

| The last few posts are all about right.
If the money wasted in the Prison Service makes your hair curl, you should see the wastage and mismanagement in the NHS!
Sweden has a properly socialist tax system, but there are still billionaires and abject poverty. There's no Utopia under any system...but that doesn't mean we shouldn't be striving for a fairer society and distribution of wealth.
For what it's worth, I think every household in Wakefield should pay a one-off "tax" of £50, to be used for public health (starting with the Community Stadium).
Still, I would think that, I live in Barnsley.

You'd think.
Actually it's £1.5bn.
I've no objection to the taxman squeezing Branson's knac*ers until he coughs up a bit more towards the other £13.5bn. Unless you reckon each of us 30 million should chuck an extra £500 per annum into the kitty?

| But then, any attempts at reform are beaten down...
It needs to change - but won't.
I think the Tories strategy is to pretend they want to reform it, knowing that Labour/Unions/media will whip up a storm against it, whilst knowing that without reform it will eventually crash and be replaced by privatised concerns.
The Labour railing against the reform they term "privatisation", will be the very thing that delivers the privatisation of the NHS!
And people need to stop saying the NHS is free - it's funded through our taxes - we all pay, whether we use it or not.

| d boy I don't expect anything for free and never have done. I contribute more than enough to the public coppers and have no say in how much direct tax I pay. to suggest we could pay 50 quid more to the council and some how end up with a nice new stadiums crazy.

| I am certain you are missing the point with the "£50 per household= a stadium" analogy.
You want to pay no more to the public coffers, but think PFIs, for such things as Pinderfields Hospital, are unjust.
How about if I said I can fix the trains and road transport issues of the North of England if you paid a bit more tax? Still no?
I'm not sure we do pay enough in taxes, but I am sure that the taxes we do pay aren't used fairly. They can stick your London and the South right up their Crosslink s!

| Same in the armed forces, so much money wasted, a camp I was stationed at in the south was parented by Brize Norton, they had X amount to spend and at the end of one financial year had quite a few quid left, this was used to erect a new £10 million pound perimeter fence and security gates even though we where leaving in 3 months and the fence was in good condition. The reason given was if we don't spend it we will not get it again next year. That was one of many things.

The NHS is well down the road to privatisation. Hunt’s efforts to introduce US style Accountable Care Organisations without Parliamentary scrutiny will, if successful, be the death knell for the NHS. These companies are profit motivated, and are known to withhold life saving treatment to boost profits. Care will be rationed even more than it is now, and will lead to a two tier system where those who can afford insurance will get the care they need, the rest will suffer.
In the US this model of health provision has led to Drs admitting to refusing life saving treatment by lying and saying that the patient wasn’t covered (google Linda Peeno) and patients being refused the cost of expensive life saving drugs but being told that they could have assisted suicide paid for. And that is the tip of the iceberg. Covering up ‘superbug’ infections and other potentially lethal problems by citing commercial sensitivity is documented - if you trust any Govt not to try and cover up this kind of outrage you’re naive. We’ve seen Hillsbrough, Paedo rings, Orgreave, Grenfell and other failures of Govt covered up - this Govt is covering up privatisation of the NHS by saying it will be free at the point of use, which may be true but doesn’t admit that access will be restricted by rationing.

The point is that corporate greed has robbed Wakefield of community sports facilities at Newmarket, and this is a microcosm of what’s happening in the wider world. I know it’s complicated, but that doesn’t mean it’s not happening, and unless people are aware and make their views known it will happen whether you like it or not.

That was what I got too in the RAF, I am old enough to remember services before they didn't have budgets, but when we had to work on a budget we were advised to spend to the budget or our budget would be cut the following year.

| The crossrail project in Londons provided work for thousands of northerners over the last 8 /10 year sand when crossrail 2 gets the go ahead thousands more will be provided with employment for another 10 years.
With regards to hospitals I don't have an opinion either way but it does seem a shame that such contracts can not be provided via public money.
London will always attract investment its falling down, and needs big projects like the crossrail and thames tideway just to keep it going.

Wow!
The idea that the hugely imbalanced per head spend on transport in London vs the North, is justified because a few northerners get a job is just bonkers!

The differance is thats its estimated that the crossrail project will 1 pay for itself in 6 years and also provide funds for crossrail 2
2 Provide a quick link from west to east london
Thames tide link quite simply must be done to provide an up to date system. It will be paid for via an increase in rates.
It helps to have at least a small ammount of information before spouting off I also didnt say it was justfied because it provided work for a few northerners . It provided thousands of northerners in full time employment for yearsin not only the constuction trades but also in security , admin, catering, training and plant.
Hundreds of norther companies tendered and won contracts
Bonkers probably better explains your dated ill informed attitude .

The majority of labour on the major projects in the south of England are east European. This started with the Olympic Games project. All major projects in Britain usually involve independent sub contractors , the normal rates were substantially reduced by cost cutting by east European labour. Brexit anyone?

| From personal experience you would just not believe the amount of millions that were thrown down the drain by West Yorkshire Police just to satisfy senior officer's' personal vanity. It was absolutely criminal (ironically). I'm sure it's the same in a lot of other public areas.
