Washaw isn't a centre he is a second rower. Where has he been playing all year, hhmmm second row. He hasn't got the speed to be a decent centre. He has the makings to be an outstanding second rower.

| Quote ="asmadasa"Agree with above posts. Sykes is a very astute signing IMO. He is a very experienced SL player, ex-international and one of the best goal kickers in the game. If he can't tackle how come that hasn't been picked up prior to him playing to SL level and internationals? Trust those in the game that do it for a living such as R.A.
He can also play a number of positions and with Collis struggling with a groin injury over the last few weeks could slot in comfortably at centre and take the pressure off Johns at kicking. Mellars has been a little up and down I think since he's arrived (Bradford game?) and it puts pressure on those backs to perform week in week out. Its a long season and proven strength in depth is required if WTW are to progress and not run out of steam midway through the season.
Didn't Sykes goal kick WTW to death a couple of seasons ago at London Broncos?
Cockayne was being slagged off when he arrived and he's one of WTW impact players and signings of the season.
Lets judge Sykes on his performances for WTW and trust R.A. who if he carries on like this will be picked up by St.Helens. Just need a big barnstorming prop forward now.
I wonder whether Bradford with their financial problems, would be willing to sell Kopchak? One teams misfortune is another teams opportunity:

H's clearly a second row who can play centre - see Kirmond.

| Just read this off Wikipedia on Sykes....
Paul successfully converted during 2005 to the centre position where his powerful running and strong tackling are seen to their best advantage.
2005 was a record breaking year for Sykes. On 27 February against Wakefield Trinity Wildcats, Sykes kicked 12 goals from 12 attempts to break a 17 year old London club record.
Further records for most goals and most points followed at the seasons end and in recognition of these achievements Paul was voted Supporters Player of the Year for 2005. Harlequins centre Paul Sykes has confirmed his expected move to Bradford for next season on a two-year contract.
Paul Sykes made his Great Britain début in the 42-14 victory over the French on 22 June 2007, scoring one try.Sykes has also represented the England in their warm up match against Wales before the 2009 Four Nations.

I was clapping in agreement not disagreement. I believe this is a great signing, and can remember whrn we got pumped down in london. Its when Jules O'neill played for us, apparently causing trouble.

| Good signing in my opinion, based on what he can do rather than what he has sometimes done wrong. He has outstanding stats, especially kicking, which we need.
His tackling has been shown up occassionally but mainly at international level when it was a positional thing.
He is a Wakefield player now. I support him.
..............and I hope he follows the lead of Agar, Washbrook and Raleigh. Each were slagged off by the fans of the clubs they left as being rubbish signings. All have done great work at Wakefield.

| Given that this is a squad game and we have a long season ahead of us AND that Sykes has terrific utility value, I think this is a very astute signing; particularly if Bradford are paying part of his salary.
Good work.

| Walshaw didn't look too shabby in the leeds friendly when he beat the leeds defenders and then made a poor pass inside. Mellars isnt exactly lightening is he?

![BEAT icon_beat.gif](//www.rlfans.com/images/smilies//icon_beat.gif) No one is saying he can't play Centre it's just the general consensus is that he will eventually be a S/F and a good one to boot.

| Happy with this, good as John has been with the boot in the last 2 games he clearly isnt a natural specialist kicker in the same way sykes is. We're hardly gushing with ability in the centres, although Mellers has had a good couple of games Collis doesnt look up to much at all based on the little time he has had.
Give him a run at centre, dont think he is too good at 6 from memory.
Welcome aboard lad.

| Think that's harsh on collis. Makes decent yards in the carry and can defend. Collis looks to be able to utilise the step well. Think we will see him come good.
Not broken any pots but been decent all the same, also struggling with a hamstring injury.

| Paul Sykes at Wakey, hope we can get Elima when fit and I'm in heaven. On a serious note I think Sykes is a great addition to the squad as so far Collis and Mellars have just been happy to do enough knowing competition is limited.

I don't think thats true of Andy Raleigh, always very popular at Huddersfield, my recollection is Giants fans telling you that you had a good un there.
We could certainly have used him at KR last week.
As for Paul Sykes, suddenly you have a lot more options across your backline, more than just cover IMO. Perhaps a back version of Andy Raleigh, often not really appreciated but an unsung player who makes the team better.

| Mellors and Collis in my view have performed well with Cockayne and Fox in support. If the Wakey board want Sykes who are we to judge them yet when all the pre season signings have not let us down so far.

Fair point about Raleigh, maybe I misunderstood but I seem to remember some comments about him not being good enough for a prop.....either way, I like him, I'm glad you gave him up.
