| Quote ="vastman"I can tell you a little story as regards the Streethouse mob. It was a comeupence they got a bit earlier (I think) than the one you're on about.
So to the best of my recollections just after christmas early1982 I went to a house party in Sandal. The house was one of the big ones opposite the Sandal Castle. one of your typical mummy and daddy have gone away for the weekend jobs.
It was a fairly dull doo tbh until 4 or 5 Streethouse boys turned up. In typical style they couldn’t just enjoy the opulence and free booze almost immediately they started causing bother but then in a moment of solidarity the local posh kids fought back and somehow they (the mob) ended up barricading themselves in the (master) bedroom. Rare for those days the bedroom had a phone and the mob threatened to ring their mates and get them round to sort us (they never came). Obviously the lass whose party it was panicked and rang the police. Except the police she rang was a very senior officer who was a family friend who lived just down the road on Chevet (allegedly).
This is where it gets interesting. Very quickly a van arrived with some very burly coppers and a very fat Sergeant. They came in and the went to the top of the stairs and I assume the rotund Sergeant convinced them to leave and they took the bait. As the first one came out of the door in full view of us all the Sergeant smacked him in the face with his truncheon then literally threw him down the stairs. He was definitely semi conscious and certainly hurt. Ditto the others who were then carted off to the cop shop except for the first guy who went to Pinders. No way could this happen today as it was even for then excessive force.
For a few weeks we thought we were fairly heroic and in our own way we had been but then I got told the truth. My mates parents were part of the Sandal dinner party set and the very senior officer was there and explained (allegedly) what happened. Basically no way was the very senior officer going to allow these thugs in his own backyard and the message was to be sent out by his uniformed officers in a language they would understand.
As far as I’m aware they never ventured to the suburbs again - they could terrorise Streethouse all day long but not the rate payers!. Not condoning it but boy it was effective and the Streethouse mob were shown up for what they were because I can tell you now a couple of them were blubbing at the end, all very sad in a way.
Thought this might interest you, all very Gene Hunt and very typical of the era.'"
Interesting that "vastman", i too had an encounter with the streethouse mob in the sixties.
Been for a night out in Wakefield with my mates and headed back to old bus station to catch last bus, while walking through bus station to the united bus stand there was three or four lads hanging around one of the pillars, what i didnt know was one was hiding behined the pillar. As i was passing i got hit in the face and knocked to the floor,i got up and set about him i got the better of him but his mates boots were very close to my head. I managed to get up but my mates draged me across the road to the taxi rank and into a taxi. What i didnt know was a neighbour of mine wo was ex para was waiting for the bus and seen what happened and set about them, he told me the next day he dragged one along the floor with his hair whilst punshing another and they ran off.

I was a regular up the stairs to the Double Up but never saw a fight, but then we were out of there by 9 and on the road to the Wine Lodge and Black Rock, White Horse, Chancery Hotel, Mitre, Balmoral etc....no memory after that.
The Double Up closed for "refurbishment" Still waiting for it to re-open.

| Used to start in the Chance on a Friday evening and up back there for the last ones. Those stairs down to the gents were far easier to navigate at 7 o'clock rather than 11 o'clock...

The didn't do's were The Brunswick, Beehive, Dog and Gun, Strafford , Moodies and Jockey. The first two were "chipper" pubs I remember though did go in the Brunsick from college. Wasn't there a Union Jack and a Stars and stripes painted over the whole ceiling in there, or did I dream that.
Yes, did go in the Tavern plus Swan with Two Necks, not Redoubt or Elephant and Castle nor Smiths arm unless we were on the Westgate run. Inns of Court was a good un but just begining to fall from grace (1970) Now it's deffinatley fallen from grace but still a pub I like.. Graziers of course but the Woolpack was always heaving so not so often. Harewood Arms, good pint of tetleys in there and always freindly. Loved the Talbot and Falcon.
I think it's interesting to know what pubs (apart from the obvious boring pubs) folk didn't go in. Ah yes, the Shakespear at lunchtime watching the girls go by, nice elevared view.

| Never saw any heckler get top side of Neville Sinclair when he was doing his act in the Dolphin, plenty tried and left with their tail between their legs. When he wasn't working Nev used to come across to the Star to relax, totally different character when he wasn't doing his drag queen act.

Was The Star the smallest pub in Wakey. Very tight for room.
Nobody has mentioned the Shakespeare yet. Pubs like the Shakey and the Fleece were mainstays of the Tetley's Darts and Dommies League. Most of the Tetley pub landlords threw a good arrow.

If you walk up the Springs and turn right onto Trinity Walk, it used to be about 20 yards on the right just before the Willow Pattern chinese on the corner before the Brunswick.

Used to have some serious games going on in the tap room of the old Mitre. Jim Nutter used to signal last orders by switching the lights off, then on. When the lights came on there were occasions when a few hands were on top of the pot! Mayhem then ensued

I thought the Cliffetree was the smallest and outside toilets but a good pint of Tetleys but maybe too far out of town to count
