Hmm - I'm a fair bit older than you and in my experience, vandalism and disrespecting your elders is certainly not a new thing; they were considered perfectly valid hobbies whilst growing up on Lupset in the 70's.

Indeed - it was considered an occupational hazard where I grew up and in many ways, an acceptable risk.
Thesedays however, in the position of the adult who would once have been dishing out on the spot justice, we have the fear of being stabbed or kicked to death by the recipient of said thick ear, so many adults will turn a blind eye to antisocial behaviour; thus, it continues unchecked and inevitably escalates.
That kind of shenanigans seems to be at its worst on estates and out of the way places though, away from police presence and cctv cameras; Wakefield City Centre doesn't seem a terrific amount worse to me now that it ever has been - just that some of the people hanging around there look a bit different, since we do seem to have a fair sized population of Eastern European immigrants.

Lupset was the place to be if you were growing up in the 70's.
Majority of the Wakey South Standers came from there too in that period.

It certainly kept you on your toes and helped you develop a keen sense of danger, together with the ability to either fight or run really fast.
It was a jungle out there...

Went to look at a new housing development a few years back in Streethouse. All of the show homes windows had been put through and there were a group of young scallies watching use intently as were looked on from the car. Safe to say we turned round and didn't bother looking around.

They don't call that Streethouse I think they call it Snydale villas or something like that - I wonder why

| All you lupset wallers, can you remember seeing "dean of ossett" plastered everywhere on rd signs and walls or is this something I dreamt? Seem to remember seeing it everywhere but not having a clue who it was? Anyone know? Lupset in the 70's loved it.

That rings a bell - there was quite some rivalry between Lupset and Ossett, hence the regular meet ups to fight it out on the fields that bordered both (which incidentally, have now been turned into a Country Park, with the beautiful vistas of Lupset on one side and the M1 on the other) so maybe Dean was tagging all over Lupset as a display of provocative bravado?
I agree with you by the way - it was a great place to grow up, despite appearances.

Good to know that you at least had some empathy for the hired help below stairs.

Popular misconception that!
Street house lads used to wander round in large gangs but on their own, man for man couldn't mix it with Lupset during the 70s.
My family grew up on the cross roads of Whinney Moor and Townley, just recently when all four brothers were out on the Town someone from Spa Grove came up and thanked us.
He said the fact that we lived on the crossroads stopped the gangs from the Dewsbury Rd end of the estate from getting past and offered them protection.

I remember you well - we were at the bottom of Broadway, just across from the beer garden of the Lupset Hotel.
For me, the Lupset experience went sour when they built the Aysgarth estate - it ruined the 'everyone knows everyone' culture and changed the complexion of the estate; it was never the same again.

When i was a nipper playing for the Manor there was always a brawl playing against Sharlston, some real epics, i had just been subbed once with about 10 mins of a game left when it kicked off and it was ferocious or so it seemed at the time, i think i was about 10 or 11 so it was probably slapsies, but Mick Riley ordered me back on the field to crack some heads even though at this point i had my jeans halfway across my boots as i was getting ready to get off home. Great days. I lived just down the rd from your parents at no. 87 i think it was if memory serves me right but not until much later and remember seeing Andy visiting and me getting a right giddy on over it on more than one occasion.

Very true, some real nasty pieces of work down there. Sister moved in there with her boyfriend at the time, only lived there a couple of years and managed to get burgled twice.

Aysgarth popularly known ad 'Happy Valley' for obvious reasons.
I kind of agree with you about it changing the character of the area.

We lived there as a family for more than 50 years, it was a sad day when our mum sold it and moved on, almost like a bereavement. I don't live far from there now and it's still a little sad to drive by and think that someone else now lives there.
We were a family of eight and all big lads, we played every sport you can imagine in which left no blade of grass in any of the three gardens we had, it looked more like a post nuclear wasteland than a garden.
Good memories born out of hard times!
