| A point from last weeks game against Hull was taking the drop goal option when 18-0 up then losing the ball from the kick off then again later taking the two points from a penalty then Hull regain the ball from a short kick off. Is it a good 'Wakefield' idea to take the 'safe' option? or try and keep the pressure on taking the tap? On both these occasions this didnt make the game safer is just put more pressure on us!

| When we took the 2 points I thought we really should of gone for another try and rack up even more points.. After that Hull fought back and got a few points on the board.
But more importantly we got the 2 points that count.

Really don't like us taking the two all the time think it sends out the wrong message to the opposition and shows a lack of confidence. I always think it's a good sign when teams playing against us take the 2 rather than go for a try.

| by taking the drop goal it meant that hull had to at least score 4 times, psychologically its in their minds, must admit it came out of the blue, don't think it gives the other team the idea that all of a sudden we can't breach their defense, maybe its a sign of confidence that the cat can play with its prey until it eats it ![Wink icon_wink.gif](//www.rlfans.com/images/smilies//icon_wink.gif)

It's not safe it is taking the points you have rather than those you might have. We just need to pick up on our ball control and keep the pressure on afterwards.
Bradford proved the value of kicking the goals against us. Unless you have had 3 sets on their line and they give away a desperate penalty to keep you out, I would always take the 2.

| on the two occasions that we lost the ball after scoring a drop goal and penalty we gave possession away through not doing the basic plays, that's no difference whether its on our line or we are attack their line, the game against hull we played it right very entertaining might even watch it again tonight

Wigan made that an art form during their dominance giving away a penalty near the line and relying on teams bottling it and taking the 2. I thought the game had moved on but maybe not. In most circumstances the defending team will be more than happy to see the attacking side take the 2 rather than pressing on for the try.

| In both cases, the drop goal and the penalty I thought were the right decisions.
Theoretically, you get the ball back and it gives the hard working forwards a few minutes rest.....

I'm surprised by the number of times you do not get the ball back from the kick-off. Why don't teams go for the short kick-off option more often? Yes, you may lose a few yards, but you also have a chance of getting the ball. Worth the risk?

| Take the 2 in a close-scoring game.
Take the 2 if there's only a minute or two before the end of the first half.
Otherwise, run the ball and make your opponents work harder to defend their line.
Goes without saying that coughing the ball up on the first tackle is not part of that plan.

I'm surprised by the number of times teams fail to react to the short ball option when the match situation more or less dictates that the team that's trailing has to use it.

With regards to the short kick off from Hull, I reckon Brough could’ve retained possession had he pursued the ball as opposed to attempting to block the opposition.

I do understand your point, but I like to look at the stats, and if you look how many times you are in a try scoring position and don't score a try there are obviously quite a lot. If you took the two every time you would soon start moving the score board on.
Using your scenario, I seem to remember when Frano Botica played they would just play for penalties at any area of the opposition half, kick them all, cos he was that good, and then once out of site start playing the glamorous rugby.
It's all just a matter of how confident you feel with the different attacking options and how the game is going. If the other team are out on their feet, I would not take the two. Wearing them down may not get you a try out of that 6 but it will hurt them for longer in the game.
But if it is a normal part of the game and and you get a kick in front of the posts, you should take the two......but just my opinion.

| Aye i'd say [ugenerally[/u, if your winning by 4 to bout 20 points then taking 2 is the best solution - as you get 2 points and retain possession.
But really a lot of the decisions have to be made at the time based on how the general play is going, how longs left etc.

You may move the score board on that way but I don't think you'd win to many gams without scoring a try. I agree it is a matter of confidence and also sends out a message to the opposition.

the 1 point was a good option it put us 4 scores in front the fact we were not ready for the short kick off is a problem we have had for 3 or 4 seasons we never are and you could see it coming a mile away

The point is that had we applied the pressure we could well have finished Quins off before the last minute.
