That's very true; I'm a big advocate of the marginal gains method that Dave Brailsford used with so much success at British Cycling, but it doesn't really work if the basics aren't in place. It feels now that they are - so it's much easier to zero in on small improvements that will finesse the overall performance.
Haven't been able to say that for a while!
