Quote ="punkrockandroll"For a club renowned for selling on its outstanding talent, the loss of Danny Brough (if he did indeed go) would be up there with the best of them. We need to be building a team around him, no doubt about it.'"
Its not that we intentionally sell them. Sometimes a club like us has no choice...let me give you an example, lets use broughys name for ease of using a name....
lets say Brough is contracted for this season and next to us....
Lets say there is a club higher up the league than us who wants him....
Lets say that he wants to go to that club because he thinks he can win trophies there....
Lets say a public offer comes in for him...which we reject....
Brough now knows that top team is interested in him and he states he wants to go....
as a club we now have two options, reject all offers and make him see his contract out, lose him for nothing financially and have a season where he just tosses it off because he doesnt want to be there...
or we agree to release him from the final year of his contract in exchange for some financial and/or player gain....
either way, we lose a quality player for little or nothing and we generally feel short changed.
Im sure the club see broughy as an excellent player and a player they want to keep....but...they may soon be faced with such a dilema as stated above.....
in some respects, the club is on a hiding to nothing and at the end of the day the club has to make money to keep going...and if it means there is a big financial reward available now for losing a player, rather than no financial reward in 12 months, the club is not in a position to potentially turn their noses up at a deal worth 200k to the club
